IDE question

A few questions:

1) On an IDE chain, does it matter which of the two connectors the master and slave are connected to (the one in the middle and the one on the end)? Should the master be the one on the end or the one in the middle, or doesn't it matter?

2) If i have a CD-ROM and a CDRW on the same secondary chain, which one should be the master and which one the slave?

3) I have a plextor 8/4/32 CDRW. The instructions for that say to enable DMA. However, Adaptec Easy CD creator 4 says to NOT enable DMA. Which one is correct?

4) My Plextor with the master setting shows up as PIO mode 4 even though i told Win2k to use DMA. It shows up as PIO in the BIOS too. However, my Teac CD-rom on slave setting shows up as UDMA 33. Shouldn't they both be able to use DMA?

Chriz,

1) The Master goes on the end and the Slave goes in the middle!

2)Your Plexy should be the Master!

3)Enable DMA in Windows. Ignore the messages by EZCD!

4)I have a Plexy 8432. Yes, it still shows up in the BIOS as PIO4. Don't worry about what your BIOS reports it as. Just as long as you have DMA checked in Device Manager, it will still allow plenty of thruput to burn at 8x.

1. i just like from another thread here that with ATA33 it doesn't matter if the master or the slave is connected to the end of the cable or the middle of the cable. this only matters to ATA66.

2. it would be better if you could keep the cdrom and the cdrw on different channels.

3. yup, enable dma.

4. this i am not sure... i am using the plextor 8432 as well, but i never really noticed if the BIOS recognised it as PIO or UDMA.

Toxy: I set Win2k to enable UDMA if available but it still says the plextor is in PIO mode.

Wurning: If i had them on separate channels they would take performance away from my hard drive, or vice versa.

Cable placement doesn't matterno matter what IDE revision you are using. It is recommended that master goes on the end for ATA66/100 but there is no reason to do so, it doesn't really affect anything.
