I have a system(AMD) with Maxtor IDE 20G disk which is working fine. (Win 2k system)
I got a new barebone system http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4121724263.

After adding memory i transfered the hard disk to this system and tried to boot it. I connected it to primary master.
After bios test it recongnized HDD as maxter and also located boot track.
After that it stops and complains "Disk read error. Press cntl+Alt+Del to restart" It did not boot.

I removed the disk and attached to my old system and it booted happyly. What could have went wrong with my new system?

Any help appreciated.

Could be a severe incompatibility with the onboard controllers between the two boards. Have you tried booting your win2k cd in the new system with the drive installed? Can you repair the win2k install or is it seeing a blank drive?

WackyDan,
Do you mean if i try to boot from CD and try to access this HDD it will be fine? No i havent' tried that yet as the only drive on this system is IDE.

Shouldn't the system just work if i transfer HDD from other system to this system?
What did you mean by incompatability and what should i do for it.

Not neccessarily... In most cases it will though. Not much you can do for incompatibilty.... You can try updating the bios on the new system before you try again.

I'm mainly interested to see if when you boot from your WIN2k cd if the installer sees not just the drive but the drive and any partitions you have on it. This MB doesn't have raid on it does it?

Windows has the ability to detect hardware during the install process and will install the necessary drivers for your chipset etc to make the computer function. However, it doesn't do this everytime it boots. Customarily, it is recommended to do a clean install of Windows when changing motherboards. This is especially true when switching to different chipsets. WackyDan is suggesting that you try to re-install the OS from the cd so it will re-run the hardware detection and install the drivers you need to have your system function. This may work, but ideally you should start with a clean install.

Have you accessed CMOS Setup to see what it shows for your hard drive. I don't know how your motherboard works but, with mine, CMOS Setup displays a screen where I can hit F3 to automatically detect and configure the hard disks on the IDE channels.

Thank you all for your help.
I tried booting with W2K but still no luck. I had to start on a blank HDD.
Now everything works fine.

I still have a problem though. I Installed XP. Everything looked fine but system restarted every now and then. I wiped XP and installed 2K. Then i got resolution problem as it stuck wiht 600 * 800. I installed graphic drivers and it fixed that problem. Then i started getting Bad_Pool_Caller exeption blue screens and dumps every 5 mins.

I went and updated windows every upgrade MS suggested on site. Now things looks stable.

I want to make XP stable but i dont see the error for XP It just restarts.

Any idea?

You'll probably have to turn off XP's restart on error function. Unfortunately I can't remember where you need to look.

XP will tell you something about the error if you turn off the restart on error deal.

It's probably not crashing, just restarting because it detected an error.
