IDE Hard drives on Notebook?

Hi all,

I am trying to troubleshoot some IDE hard disks. Can I do that with a laptop? I wanted to retrieve/recover some data from it. Are ther cables/casings or devices that I can use to connect to the laptop via USB/firewire port?
Please help.

Sure. If both the desktop & the laptop have firewire ports, you can create a firewire network between the two.

Sure. Get a 3.5" external HDD enclosure that has your interface of choice, and enjoy. The notebook's operating system must of course support the type of file system that is on that HDD.

Thanks for the replies, guys.
No problem with the file system type as both are in Windows 98. However, I have never worked with those HDD enclosures. Are they easy to use? Is it easy to restore it back to an internal IDE hard drive. After retrieving those data, I will have to reformat it and return it to the CPU.

Very easy. If you know how to install a hard drive, that's about enough knowledge/skill you would need using the HDD enclosure. Open the enclosure, slide in (or drop in depending the type of enclosure) the hard drive, attached the power adapter, connect the cables to the laptop, configure the drivers for the connection, if necessary (i.e., usb/firewire) & you have an external hard drive.
