I just installed a friend's IDE drive in my computer, and my pc won't recognize it. I'm running windows xp with sp2. It's an 80gb Maxtor.

I can only plug in one IDE drive into my motherboard, so trying a different slot isn't an option.

do you know why it isn't being recognized? I really know next to nothing about HDDs.

Is this the only IDE drive on the cable? If so, make sure it's jumpered for CS or Master and plug it into the last plug on the cable. There should be a jumper diagram on the label, or look up the model on the manufacturer's website. Also go into BIOS and see if any of your IDE devices are disabled. If so, change them to Auto.

Does it matter what end of the cable is plugged into the motherboard or drive?
I have already checked my BIOS and saw nothing about IDE devices.
