I'm trying to reformat my hard drive at work and reinstall Windows 2000.

I'm currently posting from that computer in Windows 2000 and it seems to run OK, but after some people started messing with it some of my SCSI peripherals don't work properly. So I was planning to reformat.

So I stuck in the Windows 2000 setup disk and it says it can't detect my hard drive. What gives?

I suspect it has something to do with my motherboard and Promise controller.

Hardware:

Athlon 1 GHz @ 1 GHz. Socket A
Asus A7V133 with Promise 100 on board. I think the hard drive is connected to the Promise.
IBM 75GXP 30 MB hard drive. (mode 5)
512 SDRAM
Toshiba DVD-ROM as primary master
Plextor CD-RW as secondary master
Zip 250 on Promise
Adaptec 2940UW SCSI card (only external devices attached)
CanoScan FS2710 via SCSI (ID#2, not terminated)
Polaroid ProPalette 7000 film recorder via SCSI (ID#4, terminated)
Agfa DuoScan f40 via USB (doesn't work)
D-Link DFE-538TX network card.

I'm tempted to crack the case and disable the Promise card (if possible) and just running everything off the main IDE interfaces. I'm starting to wonder if somehow the Promise card is irritating my SCSI. (Hard drive speed is not an issue with this machine.)

You need to load a special driver during the 2000 setup when it prompts you for scsi controller drivers. It will prompt you to hit a certain key if you need to install these drivers. You must not be doing that when it prompts you to do so. Basically win 2k setup treats the promise controller as another scsi controller. If the promise controller is an onboard controller then the necessary diskette should have come with the board along with instructions in the boards manual explaining how to install win2k to a drive on the promise controller. Try checking the manual and let us know what you find out.

Hmmmm... Thanks. No Windows 2000 drivers. I guess I'll have to get it from the Asus website. The manual is very sparse on this.

Thanks. All working now.

Yes, the zip drive works fine on the ATA100 Promise controller.
