IDE Drive to USB 2.0 Adapter with LED Indicator and LED USB Cable $23 Shipped AC

http://www.xpcgear.com/ideusbadapter2.html

Apply Coupon XPCGEARU2C for a $9 discount. This makes the shipping almost free. You can apply this coupon code before you enter your credit card info - click on the little tab just below the box where you enter the coupon.

Add 1 or 2 USB extension cables for $1.50 plus a small increment in shipping to sweeten the deal.

Hopefully, this is one of the better USB to IDE connectors.

What's the advantage of this, say over an enclosure that can do the same thing?

testing harddrives

multi-boot when different OSes are not installed on the same harddrive

carry it with you all the time in case you need to read a 3.5" harddrive or a CD from your notebook

I will find something 🙂

I have 3 drives that I use to back up my 2 main drives. With this device I can remove those 3 backup drives from my case and hook them up externally. That means I won't have to shut down the system, hook up the drives, reboot. Then when I'm done with the backups I shut down, unhook the drives and reboot.

Instead, whenever I want I can just hook up a drive and do a backup using Ghost.

So why bother with the enclosure? It just makes it more difficult to hook up different drives.

Just curious -- how would this compare with this Sabrent available at Amazon. Any ideas?

The Sabrent comes with the convertors for 2.5", 3.5" and 5.25" drives.

Ordered one; I could use this right now. I need a little info off a drive and am going to have to shut down, hook up drive, and reboot to get it. Hot deal, thanks op.

Here's a link http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications...m-details.asp?EdpNo=1225711&CatId=1204

They look quite similar, like they are made by the same company. I don't know if they are the same or not.
XPCGear has a similar model that accomodates 2.5 and 3.5 inch drives. But I don't have a coupon code for it.
The reviews at TigerDirect are good.

Here's a review of the XPCGear adapter from another site:
"Bought this the last time it was listed. Has worked flawlessly on the 5 different harddrive I've tried it out on. Takes two seconds to plug it in and it shows up as a drive. Fairly mindless process."

This, from PCMicroStore, is the best price I could find: $18 + $1 (shipping). I have not dealt with this retailer before; but they have glowing reviews at ResellerRatings.com.

Now this one says it supports up to 250GB drives. So does the one from Amazon and TigerDirect.

The XPCGear adapter says it supports up to 400GB drives - which is why I think it's newer.

The Sabrent I bought on ebay was same one tigerdirect sells....its a POS... doesnt detect the harddrive... the optical drive it detects but any disk i stick in wont read...

Thank you. I added in a couple usb extension cables 1.49 ea.
The coupon code made my ground shipping free, and saved a buck.

I got the adapter from XPCGear and it doesn't work.
It looks like it may have been returned before, because there were no instructions in the box.
Now I get to find out about their customer support.

I ordered mine and put a 200 gb seagate in it...works just fine...the instructions for putting it together are on the back of the box...it plugs and plays with my machine at home and at school...after it was all said and done i now have a external 200gb hd for less than $95... beats maxtors price by half...

I got mine on thursday, and it worked fine with my older 27G and two 80G drives I needed to do a quick backup to.

I am going to use it when I bring my father a new PC. Pull the old hard drive(P200 w/ Win98se) and hook it up to the newer PC through the USB port.
