IDE devices question

I have 2 ide channels - and can have a master and a slave on each.

I have 2 hard-drives (1 for OS and programs and 1 for storage)
I have an IDE 24X liteon burner and a 52X liteon cd-rom

how should i set up with master/slaves to ensure the best possible situation for my cd-rw?

my guess

ide-0 (main OS/programs harddrive) - master
(storage harddrive) - slave

ide-1 (CD-RW) - master
(CD-ROM) - slave

i think im wrong though..

thanks for any help that you can offer

thanks!!!

to burn on-the-fly with your burner, you should ahve the cd-roms on separate ide cables....

i would set up like this:

ide 0:
-master HDD
-CDRW

ide 1:
-secondary HDD
-other cd-rom

Yeah . . . for OTF blurning, it is best to have the two CDs on separate controllers. However, . . . most CD ROM and CD/RW drives are not ATA 66/100, and if you put one of them on as slave to your OS HDD, it will drag it down to ATA 33.

For best results, get an external Firewire housing, put in a Firewire 1394 PCI card and run the CD/RW outside of the box. USB 2.0 would be good also, but the components are not as available.

Would an alternative be to:

ide-0

master hdd (OS + programs)

Ide-1

Master
CD-RW
Slave
Second HDD (storage)

ADD AN IDE PORT VIA PCI CARD

Master
CD-ROM

or would that prevent safe writing when copying a disc?

thanks again everyone!

can the firewire external enclosures house both the cd-r and the cd-rw - and will that allow decent transfer rates between the two?

=)
