IDE devices - master/slave order?

Is there a set order (master/slave) when connecting IDE devices or just personal preference? Ex - HD, CDRW, floppy & ZIP

Thanks

Boot drive wants to be C: - at the far end of the cable that is connected to the primary IDE adapter, and jumpered as master or only drive as the case might be. All else is optional.

When your drives are jumpered for master and slave it is personal preference, but when they are jumpered for cable select (which I see no reason to do) it does matter. With cable select selected the master must be on the end of the cable and the slave in the middle.

Edit--
I am very tired. I left some stuff out and my response was partially unreadable.
