IDE Controller question

I recently bought a Abit VH6 Motherboard and noticed that when, for example, I perform a 'directory command' on my CDROM drive, it causes the Hard Drive light to come on. I tried booting directly to dos and the same thing happens...every time I access the CDROM the hard drive light comes on. And NO the hard drive isn't being accessed ( i put it up to my ear just to be sure).

Also, when I try to install Windows 2000 it loads all of the drivers and right when it says ..."Staring Windows 2000" it locks up HARD, consistently! I wonder if these two issues are related???

Thanks for any insight!

I have a BX6r2 and just for comparison I just performed a directory explore of my CDROM (it's on IDE2 and my hard drives are on IDE1) and the disk activity light did briefly illuminate. I'd guess that what you're seeing with the disk activity light is normal.

As for the W2000 issue, are you overclocking? If you are, have you tried taking things back to standard? W2000 seems to more heavily load the CPU and if your system is not fully stable, problems may appear that were not seen with w9X.

I should be more specific. When perfoming a 'dir' command, the Hard Drive Light AND the CDROM light both come on in sync for the entire duration of the command. Let me say it again, for EVERY CDROM I/O access that takes place both the CDROM light AND the Hard Drive light come on. It's as if the IDE controller thinks the CDROM is a HardDrive.

As for Win2k, I am NOT overclocking, it is a regualar 370pin FCPGA celeron 700Mhz (66Mhz FSB) and 128MB Ram.

Any more info would be helpful.

Thanks,

how about some more info - are they on the same bus, any other ide devices? also it's obvious, but check your jumpers on the hd and cd.

OK, you say both lights come on - specifically, do you have lights that you are monitoring that are physically located on the hard drive and the cdrom

- or -

are you looking at the CDROM light (on the drive) and the disk activity light on the case?

Are both drives on the same IDE port?

- if so -

Are they jumpered for one master and one slave

- or -

are they on different IDE ports (different cables)?

- also -

what vintage (mfr, model and age)are the drives?
