IDE Controller issues

Do you guys notice *lag* when clicking and using stuff of the attached HD on the PCI IDE controller? I notice a BIG lag issue. The HD's attached to the motherboard IDE controller is responsive as usual.

I have a cheap Dabs Value PCI IDE Controller.

The HD's are all WD SE 8mb.

One issue is THAT the HD connected to the PCI IDE controller IS BAD. It has a few corrupt files and such on it. Can this be an issue? I am RMA this thing back to WD (2nd one to return to them of the same 160GB size 🙁 ).

Would getting a better PCI IDE controller solve this?

I could sell the RMA 160GB HD I get and buy a SATA HD instead but then would also have to get the PSU adapter things to power it.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks.

1. bad hard-drives can be slow

2. is dma enabled, and/or have you installed the newest drivers for your pci ide controller

3. what else is installed in your pci slots?

4. don't worry about changing to SATA unless you plan to upgrade your system soon; 7200rpm hard drives are not limited by the PATA interface. (and you will obviously have to spend extra money after selling the old drive to make the switch, so there's not much to gain)

1) I see. Clicking on the HD it comes up fast but when clicking on the files inside it is slow.

2) Where do you go to enable DMA again? I forgotten 🙁 the pci ide controller is cheap, and it used he Windows 2000 drivers or so I think

3) I only have a sound card and firewire break out back plate from my mobo on the pci slots

4) I know SATA isn't going to make it any faster but was wondering would I be better off as the dam pci ide controller is so laggy. So may ditch the ATA HD on ebay and get a SATA to get rid of he lag.

Thanks.

Try your audio card in PCI slot 2 (second from top) and your IDE card in PCI slot 4, and see what effect that has. Those two slots don't share their IRQs with any other slots or onboard devices. Also, if your audio card is an Audigy-series card, try disabling its onboard Gameport and Firewire in Windows Device Manager and using the motherboard's Gameport and Firewire.
