IDE controller issue

I have a MSI K7T Pro 2-A. Something odd seems to be going on. I can be working along just fine in win 2k pro and all of a sudden it "loses" the hard drive. All communication between processor and hard drive shuts down. If I chose to shut down at that point, it works. I assume whatever Win needs to shut down is already loaded and memory and allows that to happen. Then tt doesn't detect drives correctly on start up.

I have plenty of pci slots open. Should I try a new IDE controller or are there other issues that I am missing?

I would start by checking all your drive's cables and make sure they are properly connected , also are you using any rounded cables at all ?

I have seen these act up on occasion , fixed the problem using a standard flat ribbon cable .

No, all standard ribbon cables. Although, I am not sure what a rounded cable looks like. I don't think that I have ever seen one. I tried changing out a cable, but that wasn't it. It also seems like it happens on both of my IDE ports. Any more thoughts are GLADLY welcomed.

I bought another mobo off of ebay. It's a K7T Pro vs my K7T Pro 2a but have not been able to get that one to even power on right. It powers on for a second and then immediately off. I am not having much luck getting this computer going again. I'll keep watching for advice. Thanks guys (and gals.)

Just out of interest what do you have your drives set to ? the standard master/slave ?

If so try using CS (cable select) and also might be worth checking what version bios your using and see if there is a possible update for it .

You also might want to list all your components so we can get a better idea of what to suggest.
