IDE configuration question

I'm adding a new DVD burner to my P4P800 system. Currently I have (besides the 2 RAID SATA disks):

IDE1: 40GB HD
IDE2: DVD ROM drive

Should I my put my new burner on IDE1 or on IDE2?

I'd like to put my new burner on IDE1, along with the HD, so that I can use both IDE channels for copying from the DVD ROM to the burner (shh!). But, I recall some years ago reading in these forums that if you put a slow device on the same IDE channel as a fast device then you limit the IDE speed to the slower of the two. Is this still true on modern MoBo's - in particular the P4P800?

I posted this question over on the Mobo forum in the P4P800 thread, but that thread seems pretty dead.

Thanks,

No, its not an issue any more. Are you really going to be ripping directly from DVD-ROM to your DVD writer? If not, I'd put it on IDE2.

Put the writer on a separate cable from its data source - which is the HDD. DVD-ROM to DVD-RW copying is not a direct drive-to-drive business.

Right. I've come to see the error of my ways. I've gotten deeper into the bits & pieces of SW needed for this operation than I ever expected I'd have to. Anyway, it looks like you have to copy to HD first in order to do the necessary compression. But hey, the disks come out quite nice, even compressed to a single layer. :)

I'd still be interested to figure out a way to do it in a single pass.
