How long do you want? I think I've seen cables as long as 36". No extension cables though.

ooo lets make an extention cable... *breaks out a bag full of ide cable ends*.. too bad i only have scsi cable, no 80 conductor here

but i would have to read the ide specs to see what the distance limit is (if any)

You really do not want to exceed 36" for an IDE cable.

I think the limit is supposed to be 18". Longer than that and it breaks the spec(but still works).

hmm really? I used to use a cable that was well over 3 feet long :p (hey only one I had) but then it was only a 40 conductor one on an old computer so maybe it didn't matter so much then.... Had 3 connectors (other than the mobo connector) on it too but I could only use 2 of them :(:p

Data corruption always matters.

3 connectors? I dont think an IDE controller has ever been made to handle more than 2...

Right, I'm guessing it wouldn't work with 80 conductor cables. It was an old system, I didn't know there was technically a max length to cables at that point. Never had any corruption either, guess I was lucky.
BTW I think you missed my sarcasm ;) I wasn't challenging anything.

That is why I could only use two of the three connections. It acted really weird when I tried more than that ;)

Here are the official length specifications:

Total cable length: 10 - 18 inches

Length between controller and first drive: 5 - 12 inches

Length between drives: 5 - 6 inches

Interesting, though I wish some cables had the space between drives like 2 or 3 inches (why all that wasted cable between 2 optical drives for instance) leaving the leftover couple inches for the length to go to the mobo (handy for large cases with the drives at the top and the IDE sockets on the mobo near the bottom)
