US Sen. Crapo arrested, charged with DUI

Police in Alexandria, Va., said Sunday that the Idaho Republican was pulled over after his vehicle ran a red light. Police spokesman Jody Donaldson said Crapo failed field sobriety tests and was arrested at about 12:45 a.m. He was transported to the Alexandria jail and released on an unsecured $1,000 bond at about 5 a.m.

Police said Crapo, who was alone in his vehicle, registered a blood alcohol content of .110. The legal limit in Virginia, which has strict drunken driving laws, is .08.

Crapo has told the Associated Press in past interviews that he abstains from drinking alcohol.

In Congress, Crapo has built a reputation as a staunch social and fiscal conservative. It was expected he would take over the top Republican spot next year on the Senate Banking Committee. He also serves on the Senate's budget and finance panels. Crapo was a member of the so-called "Gang of Six" senators that worked in 2011 toward a deficit-reduction deal that was never adopted by Congress.

A Mormon who grew up in Idaho Falls, Idaho, Crapo was named a bishop in the church at age 31. He is an attorney who graduated from Brigham Young University and Harvard Law School. He has five children with his wife, Susan, and three grandchildren.

The Mormon Church prohibits the use of alcohol, as well as caffeine and other mind-altering substances. The state has a significant Mormon population.

Currently in his third term, Crapo has been in the Senate since 1998, and served for six years in the U.S. House of Representatives before that. He was easily re-elected in 2010, and won't have to run again until 2016.

Crapo? Crapo? I would change my last name.

On the DUI...like I've said before, no passes. If you are proven guilty of DUI, you should have to go to jail for enough time to dry out (at least 5 years). No second chance. If you don't like my stance, don't drink/smoke/take dope and drive and tough shit.

he'll probably get completely out of it - cost will probably be:

if he doesn't get forced to resign ( depending on how many crying press conferences he does ).

Not good enough (and I don't care what side he's on...as far as I'm concerned, he was on the wrong side when he chose to DUI).

If only America had canings :(

I think a 3rd strike DUI should be a firing squad, personally.

1st strike should be hefty jail time and 5 year loss of driver's license.

2nd strike should be 20 years jail time + the seizure of all of your vehicles, and getting caught in a car even sober behind the wheel = automatic 3rd strike.

3rd strike, being slowly shot to death with .22LR cartridges, fired by MADD volunteers.

Yep...if you take TWO Mormons fishing...they'll both be afraid the other will tell on them...and they'll leave your beer alone.

I was surprised at how many Mormons I met who were named "Jack."

He actually is what passes for a moderate Republican. So he was probably set up by the Koch Brothers:p

Idaho has become Utah lite with a very large amount of Mormons.

pfff...everyone is a hypocrite at various times throughout life. so don't be hypocritical of calling others hypocrites.

In this case he is right to call him out, the Senator set the standard and has to abide by it.

"Crapo has told the Associated Press in past interviews that he abstains from drinking alcohol."

I'm not a hypocrite. I'm a horrible, miserable, unpleasant person with no friends but I'm not a hypocrite!

i don't care he is mormon and drinking. the fact he got was drinking and driving is idiotic. What kind of fool does that? they should yank his license for a year minimum. the fine ain't going to do jack shit to him.

Actually the worst he is going to get is the public humiliation and all the shit he will get at church.

I approve of this. And also make sure if killing someone while under the influence it counts as your 3rd strike.

Anyone know how Idaho replaces a Senator who resigns? This Crap fellow seems to be yet another socially conservative hypocrite. Someone above mentioned that he's one of the more moderate GOP senators. But we need him gone and replaced with a foaming-at-the-mouth-with-insanity-at-the-word-of-rape tea party type senator to take his spot to further the destruction of the GOP.

You forgot to add chemical castration and water boarding.

They should force people like this into rehab. I personally think drinking is infantile behaviour. It is an escape from reality. People like this are also more likely to be taking illegal drugs as well.

First offense for drunk driving should be an immediate sentence of 30 consecutive days in jail. Then if you caused an accident you should have to pay everyone back before you can apply to get your license back. Then you have to pay a $10,000 fine even if it is by payroll deduction.

Personally, I blame moral standards for the appalling hypocrisy we see among our population. If they were raised without morals they wouldn't have all this repressed desire for the taboo and forbidden. You know that people fall because they are tempted. Take away that thrill and folk will be fine. They won't be able to use their moral standards as a way for their self hate to fuck them in the ass. With no morals there's just no thrill in being evil. Trust me, I know. I stole a candy bar so many years ago I can hardly remember and I did it just so I wouldn't be perfect. I didn't want the candy at all but, of course, I couldn't let it go to waste. Well it's not that I couldn't but since I was already imperfect, I didn't need any more sins on my head.

Cuzz there have never been democrat politicians who have drunk and they certainly never have driven under the influence. Oh well time to go get a ride over to Chappaquiddick from my buddy whose last name is Kennedy apparently he's had one to many drinks.
