Not afaik, but if you do it once the hard way, and rip/change all new music to that directory/filename format, you'll be glad you put in the time to do it - I speak from experience.

Well if you rerip all the cds you own it's really easy to make new dirs plus you have everything formatted the exact same way.

Tag & Rename is what I've found to be most useful, although I just try and keep everything named and tagged correctly in the first place. But for some mass-editing I use Tag & Rename. I also like ExplorerXP for renaming files.

why? stuff like itunes and the new desktop searches read the tags and make folders less meaningful.

yea but when someone else is looking at my stuff over a network its nicer to have it organized. The biggest problem is that the naming of the files is not consistant.

I once tried to use applications to rename/retag all my music...

Thank heavens I had it on another machine as well at the time.

It screwed most of them up - I then spent a few evenings over the course of a month or so re-naming and re-tagging all my music manually - and set up EAC to rip to the correct naming scheme, and now everything is perfect.

Would make collection management a pain. Also assumes you uniformly tagged all your music.

MediaMonkey will sync to a device based off id3 tags. My music is spread out all over the place but all the tags are right. When I sync with my Iaudio X5, I have it sync making it Artist/Album to the device. I could have it put them in any order I wanted. You could actually fool MediaMonkey to think a hard drive is a mp3 player and have it reorganize it all for you that way.

once again the tags aren't all there.

Tag&Rename might do it.

Its working to my satisfaction, but its a demo :( It will tag from filename and redo the directories based on tag.

Its a little tricky to get used to, but what you get the hang of it, its very powerful.

The order I do things is:
Tag - make sure the tags for a CD are in good shape
Rename - To my liking
Organize

K-mp3 will tag & rename an album in one step, also has some decent mass-tagging tools for singles. My only problems with it are that it only handles mp3 and ogg, and that it won't tag based on filename.

not talking about windows xp search. but desktop search apps, like spotlight for mac osx and some beta stuff for xp... copernic etc. its not just tags, it does file names/folder names too.and its instant. unless your folders are numbers and yoru file names are trackx or something silly..search works pretty ok. even itunes search.

as for tag and rename. it works wonderful if you own the album u ripped and u have all the tracks. quick lookup of the album on cddb and it tags it all automatically.

learn perl, there are mp3 tag modules. I haven't done this yet, but it's on the list for Frank (Zombified server, disks laying everyone, 60 gigs or so of unorganized music)

It will search amazon for the album and confirm the names for you. Then it will retag the mp3s.

Itunes redoes directory structure & naming? Or you're talking about the apps you mentioned? Either way, are you allowed to determine the structure & naming format?

As far as searching within itunes (ie. in order to hear a particular song, artist, etc.), other players have search features as well. Foobar's is especially nice, as it finds what you're searching for in realtime, no need to hit enter, retype it if you spelled it wrong, etc.

My only problem with autotagging (vs. masstagging) is that a hundred different people will have a hundred different ideas of what genre a band is and of what tags & filenames should look like (all upper case, all lower, dashes, underscores, etc.). It sucks to go through a playlist like..

mEtAlLiCa==mAsTeR oF pUpPeTz (mEtAl)
metallica_-_callofktulu (rock)
METALLICA -- AND JUSTICE FOR ALL (HARD ROCK)

Call me anal, but I have a particular way I like my directory structure, filenames and tags, and want all my music done that way specifically.

I haven't seen that option. Tag & Rename has helped alot though. I've got maybe 3/5 of it done with T&R.
