if you could do anything you wanted with the U.S. government, big or small, what would it be? what improvements would this change make? speak your ideas:

personally i would limit executive police power unless with congressional approval. second i would have it officially inferred that source code is harmless free speech, not hurting anyone. these are just a couple small ones.

I'd change the way the Primary Elections work. I'd have it where the top two Candidates (based on the number of votes they get in the Primaries) compete in a run off for the over all winner. I'd also do away with the Electoral College.

make federal employees accountable for thier actions (or inactions). Too many slackers in the government work force.

I'd remove about 1,000,000 stupid laws, de-federalize a lot of things, ban political parties, change the way elections are done, set up some kind of penalty for frivolous lawsuits..... I'd do a lot of stuff.

instill a sense of ethics, none of this taking money in order to swing votes to the one's with the deepest pockets. Make the decision based on what's best for the people.

I'd do all that except banning political parties. Why on earth would you want to infringe upon the freedom to assemble and/or associate?

Just ban elected officials (and candidates running for office) from being members of political parties then. There would be no more voting along party lines, people would actually have to have an opinion.

Sorry, but while I understand your frustration, I cannot go along with limiting the freedom to associate... even for elected officials. It reeks too much of Stalin.

Well, if I was suddenly put in charge of the country, I'd probably ask for some other people's input on ways to correct the problem before I jsut banned political parties. This is just what I came up with in two minutes. I'd put more thought into it if I actually had the opportunity.

Adding campaign contribution reform, stricter rules on lobbying & "soft money"

Since we're talking about my employer, I'd like an independent review of middle management of all federal agencies, when it's time to cut costs, middle management saves each other's asses & cut the # of folks who actually perform the work. I literally have dozens of supervisors & very few of them are worth the oxygen they convert to carbon dioxide...

That's cool :) Like I said, I understand your frustration. Hell, the two party system is the main reason a lot of folks I support can't get elected.

Expenditure reductions. Our government need not spend $2 trillion a year when all of that money came from the labors of others.

hehehee...

Marijuana would be decriminalized
SS would be privatized
Federal income tax would be switched over to a flat sales tax for individuals
*Something* would be done with business income tax...but I don't know the answer to that
Medicaid would be greatly reworked
Drunk Drivers who kill someone will have the possibility of getting the death penalty

...for starters :)

I would severly decrease the salaries of many government officials. For representatives that hardly listen to the people they actually represent, I feel that they are not deserving of their extremely high pay. If you check the absentee list for many of the meetings in state and/or federal governments, you also find that many times the representatives aren't even there. So why are we even bothering to pay them so much?

I would do away with the income tax and go with a national sales tax. I have never ever understood taxation of production.

Also, I would not allow pork barrel add-ons to bills. Each bill would be on its merits and its merits only. Why the hell is their funding for non-transportation issues in a transportation bill, for example?

I would scrap about half of the federal departments and programs, starting with welfare (all forms corporate and individual), and social security (or possible modify this very heavily). I would also modify the ADA to specifically exclude drug addicts, alcoholics and other forms of "social disabilities".

Finally, I would get rid of affirmative action legislation as it relates to hiring and firing personnel. I should be able to hire who I want when I want without the worry of reprisal. Yes, I would be stupid to pass up a better candidate based on his skin color or sexual preference, but that stupidity should be my decision.

*edit
One other thing, I would ban Congressperson's Pension Plans. They get elected once and end up making more money after retirement than they did during their stay in office. Oh and limit Secret Service only to past presidents. IIRC, Congressmen get the same luxury (but I could be wrong).

Repeal the 17th amendment thereby returning to the states their representatives in the Federal Government.
