i don't know why creative is made out to be the bad guy. these are all companies with intellectual property, patents, and profti-making schemes. THEY ARE ALL EVIL. THE WHOLE LOT OF THEM. CREATIVE, NVIDIA, and ID (most of all ID), ARE ALL EVIL.

ID is just being whiney because genius-boy didn't come up with the solution first. Ay Caramba! This company, ID, touting the benefits of open-source...for who? them? so they can avoid licensing OTHER people's intellectual property and make even more millions...I say MILLEEEOOONS.

If id was doing what creative is doing, not only would doom 3 look like doom 2, but so would all the other games out there.

well creative cards have progressed quite a bit since doom2, i'd say that if id was on the same advancement timeframe as creative then doom3 would look about like quake2.

Regarding Wonder Boy Carmack - Yep. I really don't see this as being a problem. I think it's just egos coming into play. I do remember Creative dabbling with shadow effects way back when they first introduced the TNT.

Overall, I think it's a win-win deal in regards to both companies, only they won't admit it for the time being due to hard feelings.

1. Based on the history with the Q3 engine, most 3rd party developers would WANT the EAX HD functionality anyway. Having it already built-in by default is just another sweet incentive that would help sell the engine = more $$$ for Id.

2. Insuring that one's proprietary sound API is also available with one of the hottest anticipated game engines of the decade is certainly worth more than any fee or residuals from a patent lease, and would certainly help to sell more sound cards = more $$$ for Creative.

3. For the end-user, the EAX HD implementations will NOT replace what is already in in place. It will simply be an addition that the end-user can turn on or off. I'd have it there and not need it, than need it and not have it.

not really, look at the recent progression, from SBlive original to date...

CPU utilization is nearly identical, audio quality is up a whopping 10db SNR, and they added a friggin firewire port, and bloated EAX more.

I dont see how that is "rapid progression" and it certainly doesnt follow the rest of the computer industry.

I agree. The difference between the Audigy cards is basically more intereference shielding and a few other minor tweaks. Even NV's soundstorm takes less of a hit in respect to fps then the audigy 2 series does. How pathetic is that!?

yeah, programmers should not get the rights to thier intellectual property...they should spend all their time and energy making programs people can just duplicate and not worry about trifling things such as eating and paying the bills.
Software is covered under copyright laws. Software patents are an absolutely horrible idea.

It`ll be interesting when the SoundStorm 2 arrives, might give Creative a wake up call 😉.

I know one thing drivers are excellent for their nforce sound, glad I didn`t buy an Audigy 2 card, got to love a motherboard with SoundStorm/SATA/Firewire/USB 2 etc that`s cheaper that a stand alone PCI soundcard.

🙂
