Wow! That was an impressive performance.
I have to wonder if the "no soul" comments aren't reflecting on the inappropriateness of kids singing songs with adult themes. I really doubt anyone could peg her as an 11 year-old just on the audio.
I also think that Maddi's rendition is better than Haley's. Haley seems to be pushing into the raspy edge of her range, while Maddi notes seem clear throughout.
So how come we seldom hear from these kid phenoms when they get older? Reminds me of the kids who are getting their PHD's while their contemporaries are still in high school; they seldom seem to make the splash in their professions that people expect.
if you can't close your eyes and hear a kid singing that, then I don't know what to say.
her voice is very good, sure, but obviously way too young and undeveloped. she drops her singing tone throughout and you can simply hear
her. she has an extremely flat range--not that zero range is a bad thing. I tend to think that Billie Holiday, who had absolute zero range, is maybe the greatest singer ever--but there is more to singing than range and voice.
this song is made glorious by rasp and growling. the kid, more than anything, is far too young to have her heart crushed, which is what this song is about. she doesn't know revenge, she doesn't know that kind of pain. ....not quite sure she knows what she's singing about. this stuff is important.
i really wouldn't say she is clear throughout-as she drops her tone quite regularly. and clear--so what? the song is not about being clear. and that really is an issue of style. proper style for the proper song. her voice simply has no soul (as you said--she is clear throughout. so, no passion)

she's good, don't get me wrong. she really needs a few years to develop, though. she ain't ready for much.
