I'd return my Sirius satellite radio if I could...

My local retailer had the Starmate 3 for sale for a measly $70 CAD. I figured sure, why not, I'll give Sirius a try for that.

I rig it up myself, with a suction cup on my window. This is kind of annoying because I like the factory-look, but whatever. I knew that when I bought it.

I set it up after awhile with the FM transmitter and go online to the Sirius website to activate it. Great, they only let me pay an entire year at a time on top of the activation fee. I was of the impression I could pay monthly. I could, but only if I wanted to pay the extra $5 for a phone activation. The website won't let you. Charming. There's another $190 expense to this project.

OK, fine, whatever. I'll live with it. I should have functioning satellite radio now.

But it doesn't. I live in a relatively rural area, about 300km to major cities (beyond FM range) and yet I can seldom get a low static connection to my radio. I think this is largely because my car's antenna happens to be on the trunk, which is unfortunate at best for my purposes.

When I do my frequent road trips to the said major city, I am constantly switching frequencies to try and lower the static. I know what frequencies are clear yet static is still a huge issue. I can switch all day and the static will only lessen, but still be present enough to ruin talk channels and hamper music channels.

The obvious solution here is to get the FM inline adapter. Sure, that's wonderful, but SQ is still supposed to be only OK (not nearly as good as AUX which my car does not have) and it runs me a further $65 to ship one out to me. I am not terribly mechanically inclined, so I'd probably get it professionally done--another $60.

The total cost of Sirius for me to make it tolerable quality for one year? $385

I think I'll just take it out of my car and put it in the closet..

Oh yeah, and Howard Stern SUCKS SHIT. I have given him a chance with open mind and great expectations, spent 4-5 hours listening to him, and laughed less than a half dozen times. He is truly pathetic, it's a talk show with only accidental comedy.

I love the other comedy channels (Blue Collar Radio specifically) but the commercials FOR ITSELF drive me nuts. What the fuck kind of channel interrupts it's own programming EVERY FIVE MINUTES for recording of hicks from Alabama calling in to rave what a good channel it is? What the fuck!?

To each his own I guess - I have been a subscriber for two years and love Sirius and Stern.

I am confused by your technical problems - the FM modulator is in the head unit, not the radio, so the physical location of the antenna has nothing to do with your FM reception. The Sirius radios allow you to change the broadcast frequency to ANY frequency you want, so I find it odd you are continuing to have static problems. I live in a large city and have never had any problem with FM reception or static. It sounds like there is a problem with either the head unit or your car's radio.

Sorry, I was very tired last night so my grammar was subpar.

Let me clarify: I do not have an inline FM modulator. I am using the wireless FM setup right now. Therefore, with my car's FM antenna located on the trunk, I get poor reception from my Sirius antenna.

I WANT an FM modulator--but it'll run me about $120 with still only OK sound quality. I'm told AUX is significantly better--but this isn't really an option for my car.

I had the same problem with the sportster 4 radio. I had the sportster 1 I think which died after a couple years. With the old radio, most stations were fine for transmitting on. With the new sportster 4 I could barely ever find an station to transmit on that came through clear, and would have to change the station numerous times while driving. I'm not sure what they did to the fm transmitter in the new radios, but it's horrible. The radios are drawing 2A as well, I'm not really sure where all that is going since the transmitter sucks so bad. Luckily I ended up getting a new car at the same time with integrated sirius so I just use the sportster as a home unit now through an aux input.

My wife got me a Sirius kit from Radio Shack, and I had the same experience you did. I hated it for the most part.

The worst part is the damn commercials, wouldn't be bad if they were only once every 3-4 hours, but the constant commercials just drove me nuts. Finding a decent FM frequency is annoying on road trips as well, the air is so clogged with stations around here (Central/North Texas).

The billing options are pathetic as well, why can't they just let you manage it monthly? I guess they know that the crap quality of their product will just piss people off enough to drop it, so they may as well sucker you into a big initial charge.

Sirius can go to hell, MP3/Custom CD/DVDs FTW.

Huh - you must have been listening to nothing but talk radio. Their music is 100% commercial-free. The commercials on the talk channels are still far less intrusive than on terrestrial radio (Stern's terrestrial show routinely took 20-minute commercial breaks - now it's more like 3 - 5 minutes).

FM modulators suck. Get a hard wire kit if the quality is poor. If you don't like the content, that's a whole other story.

We got sat radio in the wife's truck for 6 months with the purchase of the vehicle. Lack of content and cost are why we'll never pay for radio.

I can understand that. For me, Howard Stern is the killer app of satellite radio - if I weren't a huge Stern fan, and/or if he had never gone to Sirius, I doubt very much whether I would have satellite radio now. I really enjoy the enormous variety of the programming, but he was what brought me on board, and he is what keeps me there.

I was a stern fan but IMHO he's gone down hill lately. I just can't get into his show anymore. There really wasn't any other content on sat radio we just HAD to have so we decided to pass on it. It's not for everyone, that's for sure.

I've been a regular listener for the last 15 years, and his show is WAY better on Sirius than it ever was on terrestrial radio IMO. To each his own I guess, but I LOVE the uncensored Stern.

I drove my wife's SUV for a couple of weeks and I really liked the Sirius radio. I'm having her hook me up with some Sirius for my truck for my Birthday.

I listened to:
A little bit of Stern, funny
Maxim radio, childish but amusing
Radio Margaritaville
Lots of good classic rock stations.

Going back to regular radio was rough.

My car came with XM but they have dropped the bitrate so low in order to squeeze
in more channels it sounds god awful. I'm in the last month of my 3 month billing
cycle and then I'm going to let it expire. Shame too as I really like "Deeptracks"
and a few other channels too...

I guess I preferred the subtle humor and him pushing the line over his blatant moronic comments.

Subtle? There was never anything subtle about the Stern show. I find the show much better now largely because he and his guests are uncensored - he was under such persistent FCC scrutiny on terrestrial radio that Tom C would censor most of the interesting bits, and Howard was constantly angry. Now they can just put on an entertaining show with no restrictions.

commericals?! On Sirius?!

I hadn't gone satellite because I have issues with my car (has a dvd system which is already using the inline adapter and don't want to use an FM transmitter, yada yada)... but I had heard complaints of commericals on XM. I had thought Sirius wasn't pulling that crap. They used to advertise they were "100% commercial free". I guess that's no longer the case :(

The music channels are 100% commercial free. There are some commercials on the talk channels (partly to give the talent needed breaks), but much fewer than on terrestrial radio. Some of the XM music channels have commercials, however.

I guess I liked it better when he was trying to push buttons, I listened to it a bit after he went uncensored and just thought much of the conversation was "just because they could" and I no longer found it interesting.

That being said though, I thought the show was going downhill before it switched anyway so maybe that added a little to my bias. I'll keep my regular radio and listen to Bob & Tom now.

My Sirius tuner is 'hardwired' into my Pioneer deck using Pioneer's bus system thingy. And the Pioneer controls the Sirius tuner. It sounds pretty good. CD good? No, better than FM, yes.
