With LCD monitors, what is meant by active matrix, passive matrix, TFT, etc. (I think there is one other term)? What are the internal workings and quality characteristics that set each design apart from the others?

Active matrix and TFT displays are the same thing. They differ from passive matrix (also known as HPA) screens in that they have a wider viewing angle, are brighter, and generally have better visual quality across the board. Passive matrix screens are only used on very low cost laptops these days; all standard laptop and desktop LCD monitors are active matrix displays.
