I'd like to connect my desktop and laptop through a router

I have a desktop and laptop that both connect to the internet through a wireless router. My other roommates share the router, so I'd like to use my wired router to connect my computers so I can share files privately. Can someone explain how to set this all up so I can share a folder on each computer?
