ICS won't work with PPPoE ?

I enabled the 'internet connection sharing' option but my ICS clients couldn't get connected to the internet using ADSL. I tried 56K dial up and everythign worked just fine. So I think this is something wrong witht the PPPoE adapter. ICS Host running windows 2000 and clients running windows 2000 and winME. the LAN is working. All use static IP. Is it true that ICS won't work with PPPoE ? I'm using WinPoET. Can anyone show me how to fix this ? Should I use proxy server instead of MS's ICS ?
I can't find any free proxy server application except AnalogX proxy. Is it good ?

Yes its' true, someone wrote a pppoe ras adapter that fixs it but you should just get a dsl/cable router.. takes the load off ur software... forgot the website but it's here somewhere..

If you insist in staying with software solution, try this:

RASPPPOE, PPP over Ethernet Protocol for Windows 98/98SE/ME/2000/XP.

The best solution is to get a Cable/DSL Router. Even if you don't have a Network you get ($50-$70), hardware Firewall and an independent PPPOE device.

You can uninstall WinPOET and whatever else, the ISP dished you.

Working through the Router in a DSL connection should yield faster smoother Internet connection (it is estimated that the PPPOE software creates a 5-10% reduction in the speed of the connection).

I have Sprint DSL (through Earthlink) using WinPOET on Win98SE. I've been trying to do something similar without having to buy a router. Go to Practically Networked -- they have a good tutorial on installing ICS. I had ICS working just fine without any problems between a Win98SE and a WinME computer. I didn't want to be stuck with windows, so I installed AnalogX's proxy on my main computer, and it works fine if you only want e-mail, www, news, and a few other services. I can still get 60k/s (about my max) on the client computer using AnalogX's proxy, but remember you'll be limited in what you can do with this program.. (btw, both ICS and proxy work with WinPOET in Win98SE).

Right now I'm trying to install a linux-based floppy router onto an older computer so all my computers can play games, do IRC, and other stuff.. so if you have an older computer to spare that might be a good way to go as well.. If you go this way, check out
Coyote Linux - this is what I'm trying to use right now since it supports PPPoE..

Also, that RasPPPOE that JackMDS said works great with Win2k.. haven't tried the Win98 version..

good luck..

I'll throw in another vote for raspppoe I have used it under 2K on a few machines and under 1crappyME computer and all worked great.

I remember there being an option to have raspppoe run as a service but I cannot seem to find it in the new version any ideas?

Ok, I uninstalled WinPoET, and installed RASPPPoE and MS ICS. Now everything runs smoothly. !!!!
I can't believe it myself 🙂

And unlike most things hi-tech, raspppoe is FREE. I just this morning got my DSL connection here in the Ozark boonies but I had done a bit of research and found raspppoe in the process. I first tried the CenturyTel software (Winpoet) and sure enough, no ICS. Restored my ghost image (also GREAT!) and then installed the raspppoe protocol. That was yesterday.
Today, with a live connection, gave the command, established the connection and WALLAH! - ICS works perfectly and my wife's machine gets the same speed as mine. Mine being Win2K and hers is 98se. Best thing since sliced bread IMHO!

I did read where one fellow solved his ICS problem with PPPOe by simply making a normal dialup the ICS connection and then setting the DSL connection as default. Claimed it worked beautifully but I didn't try it so can't confirm.

RASPPPOE 😀
