How will this translate to phones with physical buttons? Will those virtual buttons be turned off?

Going by the pics of that Nexus S with ICS that got leaked phones that have physical buttons will continue to use them like they did on Gingerbread and the virtual buttons will only be present on phones without them.

Ah yes I forgot that it was put on a Nexus S, I'll have to look that up.

yeah I'm pretty worried about phones dropping the physical buttons. No fun.
As long as they have back and menu I think that's good enough.

I'm not concerned with the lack of physical buttons. I just didn't know how things would play out with phones that actually had them, like HTC Rezound or Droid RAZR or SGS2 once they get the update pushed to them (or a dev works his/her magic! :)). I really wanted the Galaxy Nexus, but upon hearing that it is most likely going to be using the 4430 or 4460, aka not the fastest chipset, and which means it is using an old GPU, even if it is overclocked, I'm a little worried about performance.

I did want that 4.65" screen though....

I know it is still too early to tell, but hopefully we will get some people to step forward with concrete leaks soon like a pic of the Phone details. That usually comes out for hyped phones.
