Icons disapear in xp home

Hi
My icons have dissapeared in xp home when i boot up normally but not when im in safe mode

Rt-click on desktop -> Arrange Icons By -> Show Desktop Icons (must be checked for them to be visible)

or if it's only My Computer, etc:
Rt-click on desktop -> Properties -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop -> click all the necessary checkboxes -> ok -> ok

geez its more serious. i got no start button or the bar down the bottom, its a wallpaper with only a balnk screen

You have some serious issues most likely with either spyware or viruses. Is your machine updated and have you done a scan for spyware recently? Did you install service pack 2?
