Well, I just bought Baldur's Gate II Ultimate Collection (the game and the expansion pack). I could not find a copy of BG I or PlaneScape.

Should be here in about a week (going to start the shadowlords/dreamcatcher series while I wait), thanks for the information guys, think I will be too far lost for not having played the first one if I start with the 2nd one?

You definitely won't be. You may not get all the character connections, but the game does a really good job of easing you into the story. In any case, the two storylines aren't really related at all, actually...

Thanks, I will not read any spoilers from the first one then so I can play it later if I find a copy of it.

My favorite was BG I/II.

IWD was HEAVY on the combat and light on the character and plot.
PT was heavy on the plot and dialog, but light on the action.

I think BG got the right balance between all the aspects that make a good RPG. They were all fun and all were WELL worth playing.

BG 1 and 2 were 2 of the top 5 RPG's ever made in my opinion. Icewind Dale was good, but much more action oriented. Sounds to me like you will want to play the baldur's gate games.

Sounds to me like I want to play them again too 😱

I normally replay them every 12 months or so - great games 😀

Oh, it's rather hard to avoid spoilers from the first game. Parts of it are distributed nicely throughout the story in the form of dialogue, cutscenes (more like chapterscenes, but whatever), and even items. If you really don't want to get any spoilers you should probably look for a copy of the first game and play it first. A fringe benefit of that is you get to carry over your character from the first game, but not your items.

Looking at the poll results, I can only assume a lot of people havn't played Planescape Torment or it was added extremely late to the poll. Removing it from the equation, BG1/2 is 2nd best. PST is in a class of it's own though.

I've always had a tough time deciding between PST and BG but I've still gotta go with BG

Found a copy of BG1 online, new (factory sealed), but it is the 5-cd original version. From the looks of Bioware's forums, it will run on XP. Oh well, it was only $8, but I got raped on shipping (UPS ground for $7 or 2-day fedex for 9, go figure), but I guess from what I hear people say about it that it is worth the $17, especially since this is a new copy and it has not been soaked in a urine puddle on some dorm room floor.

I enjoyed BG1 and BG2. Planescape was great, very good game, but it did not get much attention. Beat IWD1, LOTS OF FIGHTING. I got bored of IWD2 about 1/4 of the way through.

Wonder if you got bored of IWD2 at the same place as me. I think it was this maze inside a cave with lava and like 5 levels with teleporters or some crap like that.

Hmm... it kinda seems like I'm the only one who gets horribly bored of BG2 here. IWD2 had me hooked until the very last fight (which I never finished, but that's common for me).

PS:T is on an entirely different level story/character-wise, much more like a really good book. Potential downsides for some people are the lack of character customisation of party members and combat that tends on the easy side with a fighter-based Nameless One.

Too bad there isn't a hack or mod out there that can get the Infinity Engine to run at 1024x768... there's something like that for Fallout 2 which works, albeit with some interface problems.

Works with Baldur's Gate 2 just fine. It's not "officially supported" but as I recall, it works. 1280x1024 didn't, though, IIRC.

Quick question about BG. Is there anyway to speak to my party members? One of the things that I liked about NeverWinter Nights Hordes of the Underdark was that my party members always had input to say about the situation and I could strike up conversations with them. They seem rather quiet so far, but I am only in chapter 2.

Haven't loaded up BG in a while but iirc yes, you can speak to your party members at any time. Just click the mouth/face thing and then click on your party member.

you can just select the unsupported resolutions in the BG2 config...

I received my copy of BG2 Collection and Icewind Dale The Ultimate Collection from Amazon today. This thread made me get it.

I really enjoyed the old CRPG like Wizard's Crown and Gold box Pool of Radiance when I was younger. Hopefully I can get into these as well. I'm planning on starting with Icewind Dale.
