so i'm clueless as to actually HOW to play...i figured out a few things sinc ei'm not clueless...but mus t i move all characters needlessly? Isn't there a way to set the other characters to "Computer Controlled"?

Because i can select them all and walk around...but in battle its hard to manage because if i select all i can only physical attack...i ts too difficult to issue commands when the battles occur so fast

any tips anyone? thanks

I haven't played the game before, but maybe you can pause the game to issue commands.

half the fun of the IWD/BG series is micromanaging the battles..

Aye, its why the battles were so strategic and enthralling. I miss this aspect in modern RPGs. Only controlling a single character at a time makes the battles so hard. You can 'queue' up spells though, can't recal the name of the spell that lets you queue things up though.

IWD1/2 are both VERY good hack and slash games. IWD2 was so far ahead of D2, it wasn't even funny.

You can customize when the game auto-pauses in the gameplay options menu, I set mine to enemy sighted, enemy defeated and unchecked everything else. You can also select a.i. scripts for each character which help automate how the characters react in certain situations. I didn't mess with scripts much, I prefered to micro manage.

IWD2 is similar to the Baldurs Gate series, but they concentrated on strategic AD&D battles.

So if you're not a big fan of manually controlling each of the characters, spending lots of time configuring the best "tank"/selecting the best spells, getting all the quickslots set up the way you want to... this game won't be that much fun. Really, the "big deal" with this game were the tough battles that strategic DnD'ers found fun.

The story ain't that great. Not much real "role-playing" - unlike BG2. As well, many would argue that DnD has more "fun" strategic battles, since it's higher level... so... whatever. :)

And yes it is buggy. But try getting the IWD2 "fan-fix collection", where some fan has tried to hack together a bunch of fixes on his own. That alleviates some of the bugs at least. And another fan tried creating alternative AI scripts, which *may* help if you don't like manually controlling all the fighters.

Not sure about Icewind dale but in Baldurs gate you go to the player profile screen. On the bottom section is a button for customizing. You can set a script for each PC, even your main character. Usually the patches add more scripts and I think you can download some from fan sites. Just remember, if you set up a magic users script, they have a tendancy to waste spells.

The spells contingency, minor spell sequencer, and spell sequencer allow automated casting. After you set up these spells you can rest, regain your memorized spells and the contigengies will still be available as quick slot items.
