Looks like a pretty neat country. I've been there once, when I was very young, but it's almost been added back into my list of places to go:

Renewable energy provides over 70% of the nation's primary energy.[43] Over 99% of the country's electricity is produced from hydropower and geothermal energy, and the country expects to be energy-independent by 2050.[43] Iceland's largest geothermal power plant is located in Nesjavellir, while the Kárahnjúkar dam will be the country's largest hydroelectric power plant.

Nonetheless, Icelanders still emit 10.0 tonnes of CO2 equivalent of greenhouse gasses per capita, higher than France or Spain. This is due to the wide use of personal transport. Iceland is the only country that has filling stations dispensing hydrogen fuel for cars powered by fuel cells. It is also one of a few countries currently capable of producing hydrogen in adequate quantities at a reasonable cost, because of Iceland's plentiful geothermal energy.

While in the past there has been minimal oil and gas production in Iceland, on January 22, 2009 Iceland announced its first round of offshore licensing to companies looking to explore for hydrocarbons in the region.[44]

Anyone here ever been to Iceland extensively?

Well didn't this country just suffer a economic crash?

Not sure if now is the time to go there.

I would LOVE to go. It looks gorgeous-- my British cousin spend considerable time there riding his motorcycle around and he said it was the most beautiful place he's ever been to. As far as getting there is concerned, it's relatively inexpensive (as compared to other European destinations)-- ~$400 round trip on IcelandAir from NYC.

You better go before they cease to exist. :p

edit: But seriously, 2Xtreme21 is right. Exchange rates for the króna are probably very good, so if you want to visit probably not a better time than the current.
