Was this some recent formation or something? If it's highly visible how come we've never seen it before? lol

They would never be able to climb into the crater, and the move only a couple feet every day.

I got into a discussion the other day with my roommate about alien life. He stated that he doesn't believe that life exists outside of earth and that he is "one of those people that needs to see something before [he] believeit." He is also an extremely conservative christian, which I thought was ironically humorous.

those rovers are tougher than people originally gave them credit for... they expected them to be dead after a few months (sand would cover their solar panels) but they are still going strong and gathering more and more useful data. If they were close, i wouldn't be surprised if they could reach (slowly) that water, but for all I know, they may be on the other side of the planet.

visibile based on the technology being used.
Previously were never had close in observations of the planet.
What observations that existed were either to far away and/or not looking in the proper area.
Example:
Driving along the street, do you see what is in the bottom of every pothole or just know that it is a pothole.
Now walk the same path looking down instead of forward. Entirely different perspective.
