Ice Cream and Stupid Parents

The wife and I decided to goto the local homemade ice cream shop last night to get some tastey after dinner treats. I had ordered and was waiting for my ice cream when this guy who looked like he just got off of work possibly in landscapings came in with two younger boys. They were probably both about 11 or 12, and looked as though they either just got done playing in the woods, or hadnt taken a bath in about 2 months. The kids were excited as kids get and ran up to the ice cream case to look at all the flavors.

The case was long and my wife and I were at one end while the boys started at the opposite and worked their way towards me... I took a step back to give them some room, and my wife who was still perusing the flavors was knocked into by one of the boys. Perhaps he didnt see her because of his fixation on the ice cream, fine no problem, but instead of apoligizing he just went on with his quest, kids will be kids I guess.... I was bothered because I saw the father looking at what had just happened, and he didnt say a thing.

Next I had my ice cream in hand and my wife ordered. Waiting for her order, the same boy that ran into my wife, decided he wanted to walk as close as he possibly could behind me, and in doing so, started coughing up a lung without covering his mouth... I felt his hot, germ infested breath hit my arm at full force, immediatley grossing me out a bit. Again, irritated but semi-understanding, I figured kids will be kids and not all of them cover their mouth when they cough, but after glaring at him (which he didnt notice) I looked up and saw the father, again, glancing over with an apathetic look on his face, lips sealed.

Parents, please... teach your kids manners, respect, and hygene. A simple "Timmy, cover your mouth when you cough!" or "Johnny, say you're sorry!" would have done the job and would have aleviated my disgust. Instead I went home irritated and stewing, and washed my arm with some nice antibacterial soap.

? ?

Stereotypically, Asian parents have an image of being strict when it comes to manners and courtesy. Ironically, it most cases it is true. The thought of coughing without covering my mouth, chewing with my mouth open, slurping soup, and other bad habits were taught/beaten into me at a young age (not to mention the multiplication table at grade 1). :(

When that kid was really close behind you, you should have made like you were bending over to pick up some change and butt-bunted him backwards onto his ass. Then you should have made a point to NOT apologize.

Well, it's not just a stereotype, as i find that it's true almost all of the time.

Ah, that makes sense now. Sounds like Asian parents are good parents in that regard! :) Although multiplication tables at grade 1 may have been cruel and unusual punishment.

I'm generally non-confrontational, but that would have been funny.

I must be asian...oh wait, I'm not. I think those things are consistent with good parenting, not just asian parenting.
