I remember pre 9/11 passports were not needed to go to the states. After 9/11 it was highly recommended to get one and not long after it was required.

...... whereas the FACT that they had NO REASON to enter the US illegally is just that . . . an indisputable FACT.

Wait, what? You claim they had no reason to enter the US illegally is an indisputable fact, but how could you possibly know that? While you might assume they had NO REASON to enter the US illegally, your conclusion this is an indisputable FACT could easily be construed as an untruth because you have no way of knowing that is actually true. Please do not repeat or I will have to report your post for review by the mods. Reals over feels my friend.

I can remember repeatedly crossing into Canada with my parents without any passport or visa and only the very most perfunctory of a check . . . even more perfunctory to the one you (used?) to get crossing into California from Nevada or Arizona by car!

Many, many times I crossed into Canada to drink beer and see bands perform in clubs I wasn't old enough to go to here in Detroit. I did a bunch of crazy shit back then that kids could never get away with today. While some trumpers may long for the good ole days that weren't, I'm kinda glad that today is different than yesterday.

Please enlighten me. Whether you consider immigrants arriving by the boatload at Ellis Island or the literally 5,500 miles of open border between the US and Canada (+ large sections of US/Mexico border) we’ve always had open borders. It’s not some sort of Democrat invention.
Just because there is not a physical barrier, doesn't mean the border can be crossed without obtaining approval. Again the term "open borders" doesn't mean what you think it means.

They were sent home. At least they didn't languish in ICE hell, like the coloured.

Best quote:

In its statement, ICE said the Berks County detention centre “provides a safe and humane environment for families as they move through the immigration process,” and is regularly awarded “exceptional ratings” for health and safety.

I'm sure it's the best of ICE's baby prisons. "Our concrete floors are a full four degrees warmer than other prison's concrete floors!"
