Says Canada refused them reentry. Seems odd. I feel like I am still missing important pieces of this story, regarding exactly how our two countries have handled and discussed this matter.

You do know that there's a process for someone to go back to Canada right? Border agents can't just escort them back across? Of course you did. You're obviously extraordinarily intelligent.

It's been reported that the Canadian government has refused them reentry. In the case of the idiot jogger that everyone keeps bringing up it took the CA .gov more than a week to even agree to check if she was eligible to return.

Which part of the process involves flying them from Washington to a baby prison in Pennsylvania because reasons and making the mother and child sleep on a concrete floor with a tin foil blanket?

I fully acknowledge that no one has to accept this as my comments are just some guy on the internet and I can't provide sources at this time, and also I'm not making any excuses about how they may have been treated, but everyone should withhold judgement on them being arrested and held. There are some major details left out of their story.

I will withhold judgment on if they should be held, but the conditions in which they are being held are unacceptable. We are a large rich nation. We can treat people better than this. There is simply no reason for this other than a lack of empathy. We must do better.

The reason is $$$. These private prisons get $750/person/day, so they maximize profits by giving them bare minimum (or no) sanitation supplies or beds.

I don't "open borders" mean what you think it does.

Please enlighten me. Whether you consider immigrants arriving by the boatload at Ellis Island or the literally 5,500 miles of open border between the US and Canada (+ large sections of US/Mexico border) we’ve always had open borders. It’s not some sort of Democrat invention.

I don't know if that is the cause or not, but I will say that I am categorically against private prisons and any form of profiteering on the criminal justice system in general, including the near slave labor of prisoners.

open borders require no passports, check, visa, ect

try walking into mexico without being checked

I can remember repeatedly crossing into Canada with my parents without any passport or visa and only the very most perfunctory of a check . . . even more perfunctory to the one you (used?) to get crossing into California from Nevada or Arizona by car!

its not like that anymore

s it drove on Avenue 0 in Canada before it "turned south and entered the U.S. illegally, by slowly and deliberately driving through a ditch onto Boundary Road in Lyndon, Washington."

Immigration officials said that, while the family members were being processed, records revealed two adults in the group had been "previously denied travel authorization to come to the United States."

CBP told Fox News that "attempts were made to return the individuals to Canada, however, Canada refused to allow their return."

Otoh, as British citizens, if they were really trying to enter America, they could have flown in hassle free and visa free directly from GB.

So, yeah, compelling contradictory evidence. I'd like to see the tape of these folks entering before I totally believe the immigration officials, and I'd like to hear from Canadian officials as to why they were not allowed to return, if indeed that was exactly the case . .. whereas the FACT that they had NO REASON to enter the US illegally is just that . . . an indisputable FACT.

i just looke at ave 0 and boundary roads on google maps
the are not connected. there is a ditch between them.
the average person would not cross

something smells fishy

I agree it's possible more might come out about this. I wonder if they were just trying to take a holiday in the US without having to do the stuff you are now required to do to qualify for the visa-free visitor thing? (I gather you now have to give loads of information over the internet beforehand). I can't think of anything very sinister they could have been up to, but can definitely believe it wasn't the complete accident they claim.

To be honest part of my reaction to the story was to think "what did you expect immigration services to be like? They behave horribly all over the world, the only slight surprise here is they are being horrible to white people".

Well, their lawyer said they swerved into the ditch to avoid an animal. But, yes, more into is definitely needed.

Tell me, though, since you seem invested in this story. If the story of how they and their children have been treated by ICE, or even if only 80% of it is true, what is your stance on ICE's treatment of them?

Not quite. The follow up story says that two of their party were denied through ESTA. While it's true you don't need a visa to visit here from the UK you do need to obtain authorization through ESTA.

not invested. and there are no facts yet as to how they were treated.
i'll see what i can find about it

i did just find this

but iwant to see the video

Not sure why you're reposting a link already posted, but if you are somehow putting it forth as advancing the known facts in this case (else, why would you link to it in a post wherein you deem the already posted statements by the couples lawyer as not being facts) , allow me to post some of the "facts" in your very own "factual" link:

"The family’s lawyer, Bridget Cambria, of Aldea — the People’s Justice Center, said the CBP statement actually confirms her clients’ account. She described an innocent family that mistakenly took a wrong turn, and was now being painted in the worst possible light by authorities seeking to justify their misguided actions.

For instance, she said, the $16,600 in Canadian money — worth $12,600 in U.S. dollars — sounds nefarious until one considers that the sum came not from one person, but from seven people traveling across the country.

“It just corroborates they were a large family on vacation,” she said.

Once the family was in U.S. custody, Canada couldn’t accept their return — they’re not Canadian citizens, she said.

She said her clients described the “ditch” as more of a grass median. They were in the United States about five seconds before being stopped and arrested, she said."

As for your statement that you are not invested in this story, i.e., that you don't care about it, the FACT that you have taken it upon yourself to post multiple times, as much or more than anyone else participating, fairly screams otherwise.

The ditch is not a grass median. The idea that you could swerve to miss an animal on 0 ave and end up on boundary road without knowing it is frankly absurd.

They were all denied an ESTA for a reason.

However, even if they are terrorists the alleged holding conditions are inexcusable.

I posted a picture earlier in this thread that shows a part of the grass strip where it appears quite plausible that a car could go from one road to the other.
