wheres your 5 stars now ford?
I guess that 5 star governmental frontal crash test rating didnt help these people too much. Who would have thaught accidents were not always front impact!
Please buy safe cars

No car is ever 100% safe. A 5 star rating is pretty impressive, even only for frontal impacts.
Besides, not having 5 star on side impacts doesn't make it a side impact deathtrap, I'd still rather be driving a Taurus than a Geo if I have to get sideswiped.
My Sable is a safe car. It has a really large width/height ratio and is very unlikely to roll over in comparision to, say, any SUV. it is very massive and therefore I'm in better shape than a smaller car like a Civic or something in a head on. I have an airbag (but my passenger side doesn't . . . oh well.) so I'm good there also.
Side impacts are dangerous for ANY car. In a front impact you have (in most cars) the engine and all the heavy frame needed to mount the engine between you and the offending object, while in a side impact you have the door, and the door alone between you and anything that is hitting you. It isn't much, no matter how many airbags deploy from the door.
And saying a Taurus isn't safe because its mangled after the driver presumably slide sideways into a pole at a high speed (i know it isn't a Taurus, but that was the initial impression) is bullsh!t. Remember that M3 that sideswiped a pole? It looked ten times worse (it was probably going lots faster, but still).
A Civic would look just as bad, if not worse, for hitting that pole at that speed.
Another thing: Taurus=FWD, which means that even when your sliding around, you can still change your direction to some extent. FWD cars are inherently better for snow driving than RWD cars. (which is why I think it is b.s. to think that RWD manuals are the end all and be all for all cars: sure, maybe for sports/race cars, but not for snow driving.
But then. most people love the AWD subarus, and last time I was in Anchorage, every third car was a Subaru, so I guess four is better than two.
