I'm brand new to overclocking, I just built this system, ABit IC7-G and P4 2.5C, want to squeeze more out of the processor without getting into the hard core overclocking techniques just yet.
I ran Prime95 and I'm already getting temps in the mid 50's at 2.4 ghz with stock cooling. this seems hot to me already, do I need alternate cooling before overclocking?
Regarding the heatsink, there was apiece of lead or something similar on the heatsink when I installed, I thought it was tape at first. Should I remove this and clean both surfaces, perhaps that will lower temps?

That was a thermal pad on the bottom of the heatsink.
Depending on the ambient temps mid 50s running prime isn't that bad.
Overclock it run prime95 and see what temps get to. If it stays below 60 your allright.
Before I invested in a heatsink fan I would tidy up cabling in my case , add a case fan if possible and make sure the fans were placed for proper airflow. Good case airflow makes a world of difference. While you were doing that you could jerk the heatsink off, clean it and apply some artic silver.
