Seems like I'm almost the minority here, with all these people raving about the mobility 9600pro. But I'm with Mannkind in that heavy laptops suck. If you want a mega desktop replacement at 8-10lbs+, why not just get a desktop with a radeon 9800? That voodoo brick is gonna cost 3k+ anyways. Split it between a decent desktop and a thin&light _portable_ lappy. Just IMO of course. I don't think portable gaming with a couple more fps is worth the hundreds more.
If I had 3.5k to spend....
1. ibm x31 mid-range or apple powerbook = ~1.6k
2. desktop mid-range = 1.2k
3. yay, 700$ left for a lcd, speaker system, palm, ipod, or whatever.

btw I have a decent desktop and a dell d500.

Because you see a place for heavy laptops that makes me completly ignorant about all laptops. That makes sense. Who is ignorant, you. You think that the WORLD revolves around playing games. Woody fvcking doo. Your childish brain can't imagine someone not wanting or needing to play games on their laptop.

I don't play many games at all on a laptop. Tell mobile professionals who use 16" and 17" screens for on site CAD designing, modeling, etc. that there is no place for heavier laptops. The list goes on here too... This is why you are ignorant to the topic, either you don't think before you type or you just don't think. The Voodo was a case in point on why someone would buy a 8lb laptop since you made the statement that there was no reason to. But now you have retracted that comment...

I don't know if there's exactly something wrong with that. Not to attack any single person or persons in this thread, but it seems to me that there are too many generalizations going around. This speaks of a narrowmindedness which begets further intolerance to opinions other than your own. Saying that a laptop needs to be portable, fine, that's your opinion. But to say that anyone who gets a laptop which isn't quite as portable (did not say "not portable") truly sounds ignorant.

To lessen the severity of my remarks (should anyone find them offensive), chew on this statement:

All generalizations are stupid.

Just like your generalization of our generalization (if you know what I mean). So basically the poster is stupid in saying he is looking for a laptop around 5lbs? Man you are stupid (your words).

All of this junk has really gotten out of hand. I am just as guilty as the rest of us, we should really stop now while we can all save some face. All of these arguments really get us nowhere. We can all try to prove our points, but when all the name calling comes out we need to step back and act like the adults we are.

If you have a performance desktop that will do all the gaming/whatever you want then you don't need a heavy performance notebook, plain and simple. In this case it would be better to get a more portable notebook that will serve well in non-intensive academic/office/internet/whatever applications.
