Ibook drive question

Are the Ibook G4 & G3 hard drives the same as a regular laptop drive(dell, toshiba)? Or do they have different connectors/sizes. I only ask is because I have an extra laptop drive and a friend has an ibook with a bad drive and I was wondering if it would fit.

What do you mean by drive? Optical drive or hard drive?

If hard drive, then yes, it uses ATA-6 drives.

If optical, then yes, it should be using 12.5mm slot loading drives.

The iBook uses standard 2.5'' mobile ATA-6 PATA hard drives. Just be warned though that replacing the hard drive on the white iBooks is a real PITA. It requires you to practically take the whole thing apart, which is easier said than done.

He's not kidding. You need to remove the keyboard, remove the topcase (palmrest/trackpad) assembly, remove the battery, remove the bottom case, remove the lower EMI shield, remove the upper EMI shield. Basically what you will have left is the display, logic board and endoskeleton. It is pretty insane.

For the record, the 12" PowerBook is only slightly easier to replace the hard drive.

You also definitely want to go to ifixit.com and use the guide that they have there. Their guides are almost universally excellent.
