For those who bought this software or going to buy this software, don't bother asking for the Rebate. It is not in the box and the people at Staples are clueless about it. This is a link to the rebate at IBM's web site.

Have a good one.

via voice is a fun *toy*, but little else. maybe when processors hit 10gig we'll have a real VUI. Until then, the keyboard seems to be (sigh) the "only way to get real work done. (tm)"

I went out at lunch and picked this up at my local Staples. Asked at the service desk about the rebate coupon, they had the rebate stick-ons there and they picked the appropriate one for the version of viavoice that I bought. Pretty easy. Rebate is by IBM out of NJ so I'll wait 8 weeks and see what shows up in the mail. Comes with a little headset with boom mike as well to go with voice recog software. Unfortunately I have XP on my system so I have to download the 5Meg patch for XP from IBM's site.

Thanks for the tip!

(Edit: The version that my Staples in CT had available was the Personal Edition - not the Standard Ed.)

No, Standard Edition is probably $59.99 regular price - $25 rebate.

The best deal was recently when Micro Center had Standard for $29.99.

PM at Staples, and use a $10 off coupon (if you're lucky) to get it for free after IBM rebate.

As far as features, Standard edition was already too basic for me to keep for myself, so Personal might be toyish for some of us.

At one point last year, MicroCenter had a nice deal on ViaVoice 8.0 Advanced (previous version) for $40 - $40 IBM rebate.

Alas, IBM isn't offering a rebate on ViaVoice Advanced this year.

The last voice program i installed i decided to do 3 extra hours of voice training to see how good it would get and the results were still poor.

Voice recog' programs bite! You'll spend days talking to it (learning function) but it will still screw up.:p

Good to know; the Advanced and Pro rebates are upgrade rebates though. So these promos are not as flexible as last year.

Btw, speech recognition may not be a killer app today, but we're getting very close to the point where there's enough processing power to support a kick-ass voice application.

I'm not saying that voice/speech will be a killer app, but that at least the process capabilities will be powerful enough to create more useful software.
