Ok i guess the model i want must be very popular t40 (2379D5U) because it retails for $2799 and with the stockholder discount it is $2,659.05 see not much of a discount, Also with the university link there is no discount on this model. So if i can get the 20% off new custo discount (thats $560 off) than that is the best deal on this model correct? unless anyone knows anything else or has a hook up?

Yeah, way better than Dells. Dell's may be more bang for the buck but the Thinkpads are way better made.

I was more than satisfied with my 600m... but the T40 is way better. I bought one to try for 30 days to see if I liked it enough to justify the couple hundred extra... no going back, the 600m has already found a new home

Haha, yeah I heard earlier that there were some CPU overheating problem in 600m.

Hmmm... not with mine. Warm, but not hot. Only "problem" was typical laptop flimsy design.

the rep i originally mentioned in the thread began doing what is known as "bait & switch." he only would give the 20% on the t and x series and 14% on the rest. he said people could get a free bundle, then didn't come through. then he said he'd give people a free printer and leather case and didn't come through on that.

i got so fed up with the lying scum that i returned my stuff, even though he had come through for me and gave me free extra ram, as a protest and reported him to the ibm executive team. if he burned anyone else here, you can contact ibm management and they will help you.

as far as buying a thinkpad, you might want to wait until november for the "new lineup" to come out. the prices will fall on the current thinkpads and the new ones will be up to date with the "g" wireless, which is 5 times faster.

I got an X31, was able to get it a whole $5 cheaper by customizing compared to the 1,499 express price. I got it for $1419, list was $1,774. 20% off sounded better than 5% off anyways. I work for a small business.

My experience with IBM computers:
-My place of work has an IBM contract for desktops and laptops (I'm currently on a T23 at work)
I got in on the T23 w/wireless deal for $999 from pcconnection a few months back. Served me great so far.

Here's my recent experience with IBM:
I ordered an R40 on 08/02/03 for my younger brother (starting his 2nd semester of law school, 1st day of class 08/26).
They promised delivery by 08/15, no problem.
08/14 = no shipping notification, called IBM. CSR tells me that the laptop hasn't even been built yet!!?! CSR promises to try and make it right. (initiate a rush job, or pull shelved inventory or something)
On Mon. 08/18 I accept the configuration offered (still an R40, but a little better specs) CSR tells me it will ship that same day with 2-day shipping on it.
Wed 08/20 = No laptop, no tracking #, CSR now says it will ship via overnight shipping.
Thurs. 08/21 = no laptop, CSR has same story as Wed. (ship overnight, blah blah,) I ask for a tracking number. No luck.

Fri. 08/22 = 11pm I order a pre-configured R40 from pcconnection and have it shipped overnight w/ Sat. delivery for no more money than a monday delivery.
Sat. 08/23 = 1:00pm the laptop and replicator arrive at my house.

guess who I'll be shopping with in the future?

Wow. I didn't have close to the same experience. I ordered a T40 on a Friday afternoon with the 20% discount, my rep gave me free "economy" shipping. Monday morning at 8:30 the UPS guy was banging on my front door with an Overnight Express package from China.

When YOU call in to IBM you will be sent to a Canadian INBOUND office, they have different codes, discounts, etc...

The SMB line is the one that had the 1STB code. They do outbound sales, so 2 different offices, 2 sets of discounts. SMB has better pricing, so fewer discounts are available.
