I called the rep in the first post, and he told me you aren't able to combine a bunch of these promos. He asked me where I heard about this, and I told him about this forum (may not have been a good idea). He actually asked me to post a message telling people to stop asking for extra discounts - he said it explained all of his calls.

In regards to the question above, yes, you can get a 14.1" 1400*1050 (aka SXGA+) screen on a T40 - I have seen those screens, and the print is small but they look awesome. The T40 is a slick box, but too rich for my blood without all of these discounts. Maybe next month...

Why would you tell him of this forum? That's a great way to get them to stop offering discounts like that for those of us who didn't get in on the deal. Use your head buddy.

even better deal is to find somebody who works at IBM and buy the express models. IBM employees get 15% off, even the express models.

I work for IBM in the server solutions department, if you guys want a t40 we do have models that are not advertised on the web that start @ 1499.99 these models dont come with the 3 year warranty but a 1 year which can always be upgraded anytime during the life of the initial warranty. This config im speaking of is a 1.3 pentium m with 256megs ram and a dvd I believe with wireless. If you get a nice rep who will give you their deepest discount you can purchase this for as low as 1420.00. Anyone interested can respond back with an email address and ill give them pricing on other models like this one.

regards

I called IBM and they said the 20% for first time buyers was only for small businesses. Do I just invent a fake business name? Also, the T40 offer for $300 off and the travel bundle both expire on monday. The T40 i'm looking to get is the one that comes up under the "Performance" side on their website (1.3 mhz, 256mb ram, cdrw+dvd, wifi, 30mb HD, etc). I'm getting it for 1680. If you can tell me how to get it for less than that - plz let me know.

thanks.

inventing a fake business name is your call you can do it that way. We do have t40s that you can buy less than the $1650 price you quoted. You just cant stack the 20% off special currently with the 20% first time buyer program. Bare in mind first time buyer is a program that you have to qualify for, and reps can give you it if they feel you deserve it for future prospective business purchases. It is entirely up to the rep whether youll get first time buyer prenteding to be a business.

do the first time buyer if you want a configuration of your own. as far as a business name, dell lets you use your own name as a business name in their small business division, so i don't see why ibm would be any different.

one of the things that's happening is that people are expecting to get the first time buy discount on top of other discounts and that just isn't going to happen.

This is a pretty hot deal. But needless to say, it will still be somewhat expensive even after the discounts. if you want a cheaper, well-built, reliable and powerful computer, you should check out the x1000 from hpshopping.com. There is a deal there that is awesome. $940.00 shipped for the base model. look up my thread. search "x1000" in Hot Deals forum. Offers good till 8/08/03 for hpshopping.com. Another similar offer ends on 8/10/03 (Costco.).

Actually IBM doesn't care about this forum, most of the people here are going to buy one or two computers from them over the next 2-3 years.

That office (I used to work there) is looking for the people willing to buy 10-20 a month. They won't drop a discount becuase a few individuals found out about the 1STB first time buyers discount. While working there, the guy behind me had a $170k a month quota. That is hard to do with one laptop at a time.

That being said... there are lots of discounts that they can apply. More come out every month. HOWEVER, the rep can fail an audit for applying the wrong discounts, or too many. Then his manager gets written up, and he does too. So the manager tries hard to make everyone understand what they can do, and cannot do. Most of the discounts are a free item, or discounted bundle prices.

IBM is priced higher, so to make the web more competitive, they add some free stuff and money off. To make the sales reps more competitive, they offer discounts, but generally NOT the FREE stuff from the web. The idea is web free stuff = rep dollars off. Systems come around to be the same price.

Now if you are looking for a deal on IBM, they do a new model every month or so, and there are good deals ( against list price ). Bundles and the such.
Call in and ask a rep to send you the monthly specials in an email.

SMB ( small and medium biz ) make outgoing calls, so don't be supprised if you get dropped for a bad phone or email address. If they call, talk about tech for a few minutes and ask them to call next month. (They are guaged on talk time / # of calls too )

As of March the 1STB was a tiered discount UP TO 20% for first time buyers, 2nd month 15%, 3rd month 10%, 4th month 5% or something close to that. Basicly a tiered discount for a new customer. Not too bad when someone decides that it's time to roll out some new PC's 20% off 1800 PC's isn't bad.

Lips, my school has a site license for Office and XP, is there any chance of knocking a bit more off that $1425 price tag by not including XP and Office on the laptop? Otherwise, it'd be like me paying for these two pieces of software twice since I'm already paying for it in the school's technology fee.

evidently the discounts have changed. the T series and the X series are 20% off, but the rest are 14% off. the bundle is still free until the 25th. There is also the option to get a free printer and leather case instead of the bundle.

Looks like a much better deal when purchase through a Stockholder program (more than $400 discount on T40)

Do a search for IBM T40 and you'll find the detail

I don't think you can take additional 20% off the stockholder program. It's 20% off retail web price plus the ongoin bundle.

Stockhold program take off nearly $450 on a preconfigured T40 plus you can get a free printer. It's on the frontpage when you signed into the stockholder page.
