Hey all

Just got a cheap IBM Thinkpad T23 on ebay, comes with 1GHZ cpu, 256MB ram and dvd drive.

I'm already expecting to up the ram to a GB but i'm wondering if it's possible to switch out the 1GHZ cpu with something over 1.5? I'll do whatever it takes if possible, extra fans, mod out whatever. I have a line on a couple mobile intel PIII's that will fit the socket one is 1.5 and another is 1.8.

If anyone has any expertease with this let me know.

A brief search looks to reveal that the Pentium III went to 1.26GHz; the ones you have a "line on" are probably Mobile Pentium 4's which I believe will not be compatible, and if they are will (A) run hotter and (B) not offer much better performance.

The first generation Pentium 4 offered near zero performance increase over the Pentium III due to architecture changes.

I wouldn't waste my time on the CPU. Get 1GB RAM and a 5400RPM or 7200RPM hard drive.

Find out if it's a tualatin or Coppermine core, if it's coppermine, you're pretty much stuck with what you've got. A tualatin however can be upgraded to a 1.4

i bought a t23 off ebay too (in feb 06). really solid laptop IMO.

i agree about upgrading the RAM to 1GB (i think that helps out battery life too), and a better harddrive.

But since I use mine as a thin/light mobile, I could really give a ___ at the processor speed. 1.13ghz is enough for stuff I'll do on battery life. Plus it's usually at 700mhz with speedstep (or whatever the throttling name is) enabled.

Yes, it's speed step.. Also having more ram can actually hurt battery life but it really depends. If you use applications that exceed the 512MB, single stick territory, then you'll generally have better battery life.
