Hey RossMAN, I'm thinking about buying a Thinkpad in a couple months.

I've seen a Thinkpad T and it is one excellent machine - probably the best I've ever seen, but it is also quite expensive. Do you know how the Thinkpad R compare in terms of quality of construction and solidness of the keyboard?

I love my T22 that I bought here on the forums, it has a much better keyboard than any other laptop on the market, very easy to use. Makes every other laptop I have owned pale in comparison.

But alas I have to sell it soon, just putting off the inevitable. :(

thinkpads are more expensive than other brands because they are simply higher quality... you get what you pay for.

usb 2.0? firewire? bluetooth? 802.11b?

i'm not thread crapping, and i know that ibm's quality is second to none, but i think i would rather get a toshiba portege 4010, even without the usb 2.0 and with a smaller screen.

the 4010 competes with the x-series... so you're sort of comparing apples and oranges here

i considered that, but the x-series has even less options available and doesn't have a built in optical drive. plus, weight-wise the toshiba and the t-series are more similar, though there is a substantial screen difference.

does anyone know how to get the svid out working on a t series laptop ? icant frickign figure it out. I mean, theoretically, u just launch their display app and it picks a workign res for ut tv, but nothing ever shows up. maybe i dont really have svid out, its just like the ports are there to save on manufacturing, but the feature's chipset isnt there.

I can't wait to get my T30. The T30 has both a touchpad and the "nipple", while the T23 only has the "nipple." The main problem with the IBM's though is that they only have 16 mb of video memory. Adequate, although its less than the competition. My favorite thing about them is the weight: less than 5 pounds for the T23 and a little over 5 for the T30. In comparison, a Latitude C840 weighs something like 8 pounds! Winbooks compare with the IBM weights, but they don't seem to be customizable: go to the Winbook website and try to customize a laptop, it can't be done! That's such a joke in this day and age.

I've heard a lot of good things about the T30. Other than having both a touchpad and nipple head eraser (prefer the touchpad myself), what are the other main differences between the T30 and T23?

The T23 uses some S3 graphics chipset, while the T30 uses an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500. T30's have a built in wireless antenna. T23 is 1.3" thick, T30 is 1.4". Oh yeah, and T30 is PC2100 while T23 is PC133. Those are pretty much the main differences. I can't remember about the CPU speeds, those change too quickly.

Maybe they are good, but what about the annoying nipple button? It gets dirty and wears out very quick, AFAIK. It's a complete stumbling block for me to ever consider any such laptop.

That's nice that the T30 has some modern hardware namely the video card and RAM. I love the legendary build quality of the IBM ThinkPad notebooks, they're thin, light and all around solid.

I remember playing with an IBM ThinkPad 486 while working at NIKE, Inc. very nice machine. Of course this was like in 1993-94.

That's an awful deal, IMO. That laptop is waaay too expensive. Well, to be fair, what kind of video card does it have? You can pick up a similar Dell for a couple hundred less at least.

Guess I'm not much of a fan of the "pinky" mouse knub either. It'd make more sense if the buttons weren't behind it.

Toshibas are the best deal. Although, these Celeron CPUs suck. A P4 mobile would do the trick. I know IBMs are nice laptops, but they are overpriced. A Toshiba for a lot less with more power will last just as long. Hell, I carry my Toshiba around like a Text Book in my hand, I've dropped it and everything still works.

I find I hardly use my laptop. They're really a pain in the ass. I thought I would use it more. At least I didn't pay for it.

that's like saying "accord is waaaaay too expensive, i'd rather have an elantra"

the price doesn't just reflect the features, it reflects quality and service.

if you work in the industry and have had to work on either laptop, you'd realize that you're paying for quality product and service. the few times i've had to send things back to ibm they've been returned to me in days, not weeks. like, they drop off an overnight box, and 2 days later i have my laptop or whatever back in my hands. even had one returned back to me over a holiday weekend (friday was a holiday, i sent it in thursday, was back to me on monday). try that with dell.

here's two examples that i've dealt with first hand.

ibm laptop, customer broke a few keys off his keyboard. his fault, they had a courier type (airbourne i believe) pick it up with a special protective box, on a tuesday. on thursday morning his laptop was back in his hands, fixed. no problems.

dell laptop, customer broke off a few keys. once again, his fault, but he called dell. a week later they sent him a keyboard and told him to install it himself, it was easy. luckily he realized he could not do this and brought it by where i changed it out for him. thankfully he didn't try, because the keyboard connector was about the cheapest i've ever seen, and could have quite easily been broken.

so, enjoy your dell i guess. both had standard warranties, no special deals.

oh and the touchpoint mouse is the greatest invention known to laptops, IMHO at least. ;)

My experience with the T21 hasn't been that great. Maybe I just received a lemon, but it's broke down 3 times and the system fan is very loud. The service usually takes 2 days (from Airborne picking it up at your door to delivering it) which is impressive, but the repair job is substandard. On the second time they called me and told me nothing was wrong with the system (he sounded irritated), and told me he was sending it back untouched. When I got it back it wouldn't even turn on. They ended up replacing the mainboard.

I used to work at a computer firm that was a Dell partner, and I ran Dell warranties. We did not, however, fix laptops. When they came in, we'd check them out then call Dell. Dell would dispatch a box via Airborne Express, I'd toss it in the box and have it back in a couple days fixed. That's how all laptop warranties were handled.

Of course, if the customer dropped it or fscked it up themselves, Dell would still ship us a box and it was handled the same way, except the customer would pay for it of course. I think it's pretty reasonable for Dell not to provide free service to abused products, though. :) They didn't even charge for shipping them back and forth.

FWIW, we also handled Compaq warranties, and they were equally compliant with shipping us boxes and getting the laptop back in a timely manner.

If you're "in the industry" you shouldn't have any problems with warranties with either of these companies. It sounds like your friend is a consumer who abused his laptop, and maybe didn't want to pay the fee to send it in to have it repaired.
