Hey guys this is my first post. I was wondering which one you guys would recommend at an overall standpoint. I'm kind of liking the 600M because of the warranty issue, but I don't know much about the T42P.

Please help me out guys.

assuming the cost difference doesn't bother you. The IBM is a much better machine overall.

T42P is an amazing laptop. Its better in almost every category: screen, keyboard, hard drive, ram configs, video card, build quality, battery. the downside is yoru gonna pay way more, cuz your getting way more.

Gotta second the other two votes for the T42p, currently probably the best laptop you can buy from a reputable maker if money's no issue and you don't need a ruggedized notebook. You can get up to a 128MB Radeon (the FireGL is apparently a 9600 of some sort with special workstation-class drivers, instead of the 64MB Radeon 9000 available on the 600m); the performance is awesome; it's more light-weight for the features; it's got a better screen; the keyboard is the best you can get on a laptop; it's more durable than the 600m; it's superior in pretty much every way. I'd have to check, but I'm pretty sure you have a better choice of drives; if you buy a 600m you may want to upgrade the hard drive afterward. Also, black is still the best color for a notebook, even if some people claim that it's stodgy! It minimizes glare.

By the way, the screen on the 600m is NOT the UltraSharp advertised for other Inspirons such as the 8600. It's decent, just not the best you can buy.

Yep, as with everybody else, I'd have to say IBM. IBM makes great laptops and they're very reliable. Never had any problems with any of mine ;).

What IS it with people comparing between IBM and DELL... They are worlds apart. Quality vs. price. If you can afford it, go IBM. If money is the problem, get DELL.

yeah i know bout pricing and all, but i can get a great deal on the ibm through school. so yeah pricing doesn't really affect it. I was more worried bout the warranty as dell has the in home 4 year warranty. that's y i'm comparing the ibm to the dell. warranty is my main issue. does ibm have anything anywhere near in terms of warranty as the dells?

i have a couple of IBM T-30. they have 3 year warranties. the 41P is so much better and they probably come with three year warranties also.if you buy a Dell, get a Latitude. they come closer to the IBM's in
value.

IBM T and X series have 3 year warranties. Also all p models (T42p, R50p, A50p etc...) have 3 years.
For other models you can get 3 year by paying some extra.
