IBM T40, W2K install, drivers, hardware. Model 2373-72U

I formatted the partition to get rid of XP and installed a fresh W2K.

Usual driver headaches. I just ordered the recovery CD from IBM to help get it all sorted out. Right now I would love to just get the Ethernet LAN working so I can use my Adelphia Cable modem to surf.

Device manager shows several not working. One is a PCI device, one the USB controller, one an unknown device. I downloaded Intel Pro Set from the IBM website and installed it already. Anything else to install to get the cable modem uo and flying?

I also installed the Intel Pro/1000 MT Mobile Connection driver but it appears it needs the card. IS this the wireless card everyone wants and it on back order? My Netgear wireless card no good I take it?

Thanks for the help

To get your USB working and maybe some of the PCI stuff this may help if you haven't already installed it:

Clicky It's the Intel Chipset software.

For the wireless card you're going to have to use netgear's software for it. I'm pretty sure they have a Windows 2000 version of their software.

Thanks Kaervak,

I downloaded that file and I get this error on install.

Installshield Engine (Ikernal.exe) could not be launched.

The RPC server is unavailable.

Hmmm, that's unusual. Try enabling the RPC server in the services menu under administration tools. It should be active by default, but maybe something changed that. Then try installing. If that doesn't work try the zip file version of the files. And if that doesn't work, then man am I stumped.

Thanks Kaervak,

That cleared up a couple of the device manager problems.

I got my Netgear 624 Wireless router to work for about 5 minutes only to fine out out NEtgear has some serious issues with that router. I upgraded the firmware only to have the unit quit working. Reading some of the rant threads on Broadband.com I see some people are on their 3 or 4rth unit trying to find one that works.

I'd sure like to get my plain old Adelphia cable modem working for now.

The Network adapters I see in the device manager are

Intel Pro/1000 MT Mobile connection
Intel Pro/Wireless LAN 2100 Mini PCI Adapter

I've tried everything to get my cable modem working. I notice on my old Toshiba laptop the network adapter for my Adelphia cable modem is

Intel Pro/100 VE Network Connection

Thanks for the help

Ok, try this. Unplug your cable modem. Leave it unpluged for about five minutes. While it's unplugged, connect the ethernet cable from the cable modem directly to the ethernet jack on you laptop. After the five minutes are up, plug the cable modem back in and let it sync up. After that everything should work. You may need to renew the laptop's IP through ipconfig. Hopefully that should take care of things.
