Lots of those transplanted Endicott folks are now here in Poughkeepsie, which is about 75% dependent on IBM. If IBM were to close up shop here, this little hamlet would wittle to practically nothing.

 for a former IBMer.

Yep - Many of my fellow help desk colleagues went to Poughkeepsie or Fishkill. (I got lucky and jumped into an opportunity in our local BOCES. Working for the state has lower pay, but job security is MUCH better ;) )

:Q I did community service for BOCES! Don't forget about the nice pollution IBM left behind as well :p

I can't believe they're getting rid of thinkpads in this too...

Anyway, it's all about Services these days... on the profit side, anyway.

Ugh!

Don't remind me about the goo under our village! This is on ongoing hot topic here. I live just ouside of the "plume" or spill zone. Close enough to be affected by property value decline, but outside of IBM's "homeowner payoff zone".

Thinkpads do sell very well. I know people who will easily pay an extra grand to get a Thinkpad over a Dell.

Will there still be a "Thinkpad" line of notebooks, are are they going the way of the dodo?

I had 3 and 2 of them crapped out on me within 2 years.

People go there because of dirt cheap prices, but get sub-par build quality and components.

i dont know about the consumer line, but their entry level server (400sc) was put together with more or less the same parts that you could/would put in a pc that you build yourself. things like an intel 875 mobo and a seagate 7200.7. hardly sub-par.

Not to jump on the Dell-bashing bandwagon, but Intel and Seagate are sub-par in my book. ;)

Sell it all to E-Machines!

I'll take an e-machine over a Packard Bell any day.

Anyhow, are their notebooks considered part of the PC division?

Quality will definately suffer!

It's 1.75B, not 1.25B as previously reported. I don't know why the figure was changed.

I got a lengthy email from my IBM rep about this yesterday. Pesonal Computers and Laptops; not workstations or servers. IBM will be doing the warranty work for at least another 5 years (at least for enterprise accounts). Thinkpad and ThinkCentre desktop brand names will remian the same. There will be no changes to the current roadmap of products for at least 18 months.

Lenovo can use "IBM ThinkPad" name on their products for up to 5 yrs, after that it has to change to "Lenovo ThinkPad" (if they decide to keep the ThinkPad name).
