IBM SOLD PC division *Confirmed*

Heard this on NPR this morning. A Chinese PC maker is the leading buyer candidate, although another is also in the play.

I'll try to find out any more on this....

Oh, and IBM was selling their PC business 2 years ago, and last year...

I hope this will not be the nail in the coffin for many of my friends here in the "Hometown birthplace of IBM". From my house here in Endicott, NY I can see the original IBM buildings (I used to work in them too) as they are three blocks away.

The sad thing is that IBM DOESN'T EVEN OWN THEM ANYMORE. They sold all of the facilities and are only "leasing" them now. This does not bode well for my village

Even the Thinkpad line? Damn. Those were some of the most solid, and intelligently engineered notebooks out there.

Will there still be a "Thinkpad" line of notebooks, are are they going the way of the dodo?

Dell = Walmart of PC world.



People go there because of dirt cheap prices, but get sub-par build quality and components. Lower volume, higher priced builders like IBM either have to cheapen their name or sell out completely to compete.

Lots of those transplanted Endicott folks are now here in Poughkeepsie, which is about 75% dependent on IBM. If IBM were to close up shop here, this little hamlet would wittle to practically nothing.

Isn't their laptop division making big cash for them? I love my 3+ years old T21. Dropped it once, it still works great.

I wonder if this means the Thinkpad, as we know it, will die? Shame if it does. Thinkpads stand head and shoulders above most other laptop brands in terms of quality.

Yep - Many of my fellow help desk colleagues went to Poughkeepsie or Fishkill. (I got lucky and jumped into an opportunity in our local BOCES. Working for the state has lower pay, but job security is MUCH better )

The thinkpads are very popular, I see them a lot from people outside our company, and we use them exclusively.

I'll be watching this with interest, I :heart: my thinkpad T series machines.
