This IBM kit used sells for ~$150, is usually available on ebay for ~$30. Even with a ~$7 shipping charge, you're still securely  in hot deal territory. The security software provides system access control and can store passwords, keys, certs, etc. You can also use the reader for "smart" credit cards. Just think: Now you can have your Amex blue card at the ready - ALL THE TIME. Never miss another Macy's 98 cent bed sheet deal again ;)

If nothing else, this is a good tool for learning a bit more about infosec.

IBM Smart Card Security Kit (PCMCIA) from <<shudder>> Tiger Direct.

Abundant IBM documentation

IBM software is here

The PCMCIA reader is made by GemPlus and is AKA as the GemPC400. Drivers, et al are available here

If you prefer Linux, look here

Good price. Never seen them at 150 though, they are on ebay for about 20 bucks. I have wanted one of these for a while, might have to order this.

Software seems to be about 3 years old. No mention of Win2K compatibility, so I'd assume there is none.

There is a lot of PC/SC software available. You may find that MSFT has similar SW that supports PC/SC smartcards.

Thanks for this post. I've been wanting to play with this sort of thing for a while, but never wanted to shell out the money for it. Now I can play with it for the cost of a pizza!
