As any company would tell you, the best bet is to try to get an RMA from the place you bought it from. If that doesn't work, then try IBM...good luck, and hope this helps.

To RMA a HD with IBM, you need to go to their website here and fill in the fields for serial number and part number. If either of those two are missing from the label on your HDD's anti-static packaging, you cannot RMA it with IBM. Retail and OEM drives that have this info are RMA-able. Rebadged drives can't. You need to get a RMA from the OEM that rebadged the IBM drives.

You'll also need to run the drive fitness test HDD diagnostic software to get a valid error code. If you have a valid error code and the serial number and part number, you can create an RMA number via that website.

I might not understand what you are saying, but I just rmaed an oem IBM HD a few months ago. Go to the support section of their website and send them an email or call them.

When talking about drives, there is a difference in a 'bare' drive and an 'oem' drive. A bare drive is what you would buy from Newegg, MWave, local mom&pop shop, etc., and IBM warranties them all for 3 years. An 'oem' drive is one that was shipped inside a Dell, Gateway, HP, etc., machine. Those drives were sold to those manufacturers at a lower cost with the agreement that they would handle all warranty claims. (usually the same as the PC warranty)

Unless that was a drive that you removed from a Dell/Gateway/whatever, it should be covered.

i bought the drive from mwave. I have tried generating a return online, by email, and phone. I am told that it is an oem. I went through the same hassle with a 30gb gxp a year and a half ago that i bought from gogocity.com . I assumed gogocity might have sold me a gateway drive but did not think the same of mwave

if the vendor didn't state it's system-pull or gateway oem, and made you think that it's the normal bare oem hd, that's cheating, bad business pratice.

I just talked to IBM about this and they no longer accept ANY oem drives. The only thing they take back now is RETAIL BOX drives (Yet I have never seen one anywhere) I'm now stuck with a dead 60GB 60gxp

IBM will not RMA an "OEM dealer" drive, such as Dell, Compaq, HP, GW2K, etc.

OEM Bare drives are what you buy from Newegg and other .com (usually) and carry a 3yr warranty.
