IBM = Lousiest IT Company I've Ever Dealt With

WOW...this company seems to have had quite the fall from grace. They opened one of their global delivery facilities in my hometown of Dubuque so I thought hey...I'll apply. Three different interviews:
1st interview: You're a great fit...we'll send you an offer in a few weeks (didn't happen)
2nd interview: We need a more experienced Project Manager but keep in touch with me since you have the skills we need (didn't keep in touch...ignored the two emails I sent)
3rd interview: We love veterans and hiring locally...I'll get you an interview with my senior managers next week (NOPE...another lie).

Apparently unless you are willing to work for shit pay it doesn't matter if you have a good interview....they'll cycle in foreigners or use several unskilled lackeys to do the job instead of paying one skilled person.

I was under the impression IBM was a good company to work for. I guess I should be thankful I wasn't hired after I did some research about this new global delivery facility they opened in Dubuque:

What's funny? I found not one positive article about IBM's facility in Dubuque....apparently they were getting slack for outsourcing so many jobs overseas so they open a facility in the middle of nowhere so they can still pay people like shit but at least claim it's in the United States. Sucks though since they squeezed so many incentives from the city of Dubuque only to hire a token work force of local people while cycling in people from elsewhere to train...send back where they came from...then fire more U.S. workers.

Just wanted to do this public service announcement in case anyone else thought IBM was still a good, reputable company to work for in the IT world.

At least they didn't hire you, then tell you the weekend before you start that there is no funding for your position. /happened to a friend who relocated for a job

WOW, that's pretty shitty too. They definitely can not be trusted...no matter what they say to you. It's all about dollars and cents to them anymore....but if they don't hire talented/skilled people they'll continue to lose clients like they lost Walt Disney and a bunch of other customers. Companies are wising up and just doing the outsourcing themselves to Indian companies like WiPro instead of going through IBM.

I work for IBM. With 400k+ employees you are going to see positions that are pretty entry level to professional.

I have worked both with the software group and now in field sales engineering. No complaints on my compensation at all. I work from home when not in front of customers. The only issue I have with them as of late is their idiotic changes to 401k match...

Last place I'd ever want to work is in a corporate office for any company.

It sounds like location plays a big part...the Dubuque office is where they seem to funnel the unskilled/incompetents/local Dubuquers willing to be paid dirt: Did You Know That Dubuque IBM Employees Are Paid an Average of 20K Less Per Year Than GDF Workers in Fishkill

Yeah...I know that now, lol. Needless to say I'll never be applying to them again...one of the senior HR dudes in Dubuque is actually some contractor they pulled in from Manpower. I asked him if he liked facilitating IBM's shady HR practices...might be on IBM's blacklist now, lol.

The only reason i could see working for IBM is if you're desperate. Or if you only plan on staying like... 2 years to put something on your resume. But i certainly wouldn't stay long term.

My dad works for IBM. Since everyone is getting fired besides him, he also knows how to do a lot of stuff the newbs can't do, he gets his say :p like if he doesn't want to work a day, he doesn't go.

Until one of the "newbs" gets trained up and makes half of what dad makes, then dad will be shown the door. You have to be careful in those situations.

Theres a reason why IBM does not give out head counts anymore. They are moving their jobs out of the US in droves. Let alone screwing the remaining people here now with the 401k BS (more layoff guess what month they will come now).

The only people I know/knew worked at IBM only did it for two reasons:

Reason #1 - "OMG IBM!!!!11!1one"

Then roughly a few weeks later...

Reason #2 - "I'm going to stick it out for a year or two just to get some resume cred out of it, then I'm getting the fuck out of this place."
