IBM looking to buy SUN

OutHouse

Lifer
I hope this gets blocked.

I.B.M. is in talks to buy Sun Microsystems in a proposed deal valued at nearly $7 billion, a person with knowledge of the negotiations said on Wednesday.
The merger, if completed, would be a major consolidation in the market for server computers used in corporate data centers ? and one that could prompt an antitrust challenge.

HPQ's #1 competitor is not DELL. It's IBM.

It's not a repost.
This thread has links to the story and is much more useful.
The other one is about some idiot bragging how he made $2k.

And what exactly qualifies me as an idiot? I made a lot of unexpected cash off the deal.

Also, Sun's products are right up IBM's alley. IBM could put Sun's backup, database, and cloud tech to good use, plus finally give it the marketing backing that is sorely needed. It's a win for both companies (and a win for shareholders obviously 🙂 )

no good can come of this.

I actually haven't seen an IBM server in years, though. we switched to almost exclusively HP/sun awhile back.

There is no good reason this should get blocked. Sun is a small-timer now... IBM's real competition is from Dell and HP on the hardware side, and Microsoft and Oracle on the software side.

I'm curious what's going to happen to Solaris, though, since IBM is already supporting several versions of UNIX already (AIX,Linux,zLinux, etc). They really don't need another one.

I'm hoping they don't touch solaris. we're using os10 atm and the upgrade from 8 (with oracle 8 as the db) was a pain (proprietary software). as well, with me learning it atm i'd like to know what i've learned won't go to waste :S;

Very much good can come from this. HP/IBM/SUN have been fighting for so freaking long. Sun is on a deathbed. If you haven't seen IBM then you haven't seen a mainframe or midframe. Sun lived in the midframe space but was still a "server". IBM mainframes still rule the computing world.

HP/SUN/IBM were never really competitors. Each exceled in their area and staffing folks to support the nuances of the OS was costly.

This move is win/win.

Meals are generally interesting for IBM...

Sun has some good stuff and a lot of good could come from this...

if this would happen, i wonder if IBM would sell off the sparc workstation line, like they sold their computer line to lenovo.

and what would become of JAVA?

Nothing will happen to Java. IBM has far more Java developers working for them than Sun does at this point, and they use it in most of their products.

I'm more worried about OpenOffice.org myself, which is a direct competitor to a few Lotus products.

OpenOffice is still open source right? Even if IBM cans it the community can branch it off and keep running with it.
