to the people that have bought the ibm laptops, t or r series, do they come with an actual XP Home/Pro disc or is it a recovery disc? the reason i ask is because i would like to wipe the hdd clean and put just xp on it, not all the extra ibm b.s.

this question also applies to those that have bought the certified used ones...
Recent ones come w/ the ability for you to burn your own restore disks. :| On the plus side, IBM doesn't have much extra B.S.

what is up with the 4GB restore partition? the reason i ask is because what i would like to do is use nlite os, rip out all the extra languages and put xp and xp only on it. even though i have legit licenses for my machines, i still use a leaned out corporate version because i change hardware a lot...

My X31 has a restore partition. The recovery cds can be purchased from IBM but they are not cheap, at least $50 I believe. MY X31 doesn't have an optical drive though so they don't do me much good.

they'll send you the restore discs for free if you call within the first 30 days after purchase. it's definitely a good idea, just in case you wan to swap HDs or something.

the used ones say they come with a recovery cd(should have read more before i posted). is it illegal for me to use the one copy of the corporate version i have? this new machine would come with it own copy and i am simply replacing it, not using without me owning a valid key...?

also, is the t series that much nicer than the r series? or should i say 200-300 nicer?

ordered a r40 certified used model - P-M 1.3 / 512MB ram / 40GB HD / CDRW-DVD / 15" / Wifi a/b / :D

should be here by the end of the week :).

as far as stressing laptops, do i do it just like i would a desktop? i was thinking of 12-18hrs of memtest and 12-18hrs of prime95 torture test with the "in-place large ffts" testing option. after that i will just setup a wireless router and use it on battery to make sure that functions as advertised. what do you think of this as a torture test?

If I'm not wrong, the thinkpads are now made by Lenovo.... a manufacturer in CHINA.

I'm not sure whether u can still call them the BMWs of laptops.

What's wrong with fujitsu? :p

I have an X41 tablet PC and a T23. T23 I bought used recently but the X41 I paid full price and still think it was a hot deal at $2150 shipped from IBM. It's the best notebook computer I've ever used.

if this one pans out ok, i will probably get a t series since i need 2 (or maybe another r since it was very cheap compared to what is out now and what it comes with), but just want to try it out with a cheaper model.

You're lucky they ran out of the Thinkpad R. The T series is great all around (with the exception of the average GPU).

If you're looking for used IBM's (refurbished by me) with a warranty. PM me with the model you're looking for. The newest model I have though is a T30.

EDIT: Mods, if you feel like my post is inappropiate. Feel free to delete my post.

Levono, just bought them out just this past year. T43's and down are still made by the same processes in the same plants. Levono also has bought out IBM's desktop divsion, but will hold the IBM line and nameplate for the next six years. They also released a press announcement that they plan on detroning Dell in ten years.

i really wouldn't mind a r series, the price was right, definately. i know the t series are great, but i am a little strapped for $$$ and don't want to sell parts of my main rig to buy this laptop. also, i don't want to spend a lot because it will be used at school, where there is a possibility of it getting stolen. so although i would like a t series, a r would suffice, the extra $200+ is too much at the moment, unless i can find a smoking deal on a t series :D, which i will keep an eye out.

if anybody knows where else to get good deals on either r or t series with a P-M at least a 1.3GHz(speed is not important as a 1.3GHz P-M would be fine, 512MB ram, cdrw/dvdrom, ~30GB hdd, ~14-15" lcd (1024x768), wifi a/b/g (at the very least b alone). i don't want to post a price, that is what pms are for :D

Theguynexdoor - do you have a website?

I'm pretty sure the Thinkpads have been made in China for quite a few years now, well before the division was purchased by Lenovo.

That being said, i LOVE MY T41!!

Its a freaking tank!

I bought an Inspiron 600M thinking it's a cheap Thinkpad T series. It's not; I won't be making that mistake again.

would it be equivalent of a cheap r series?

No, the 600M is the same approx. form factor as the T, but slightly thicker and (much) crappier in build quality. Of course, it is cheaper as well.

But you can currently get a nicely loaded T43 for $1420 + tax with a 15" SXGA+ screen & 3-year warranty. I prefer the 14" form factor, but that is a pretty good deal.
