With numerours good/bad luck reports on this Desktar line, I want to take a macroscopic (dat's one o' dem collige werds) view of what's going on. Here's what I want:

CPU/Chipset: BX/AMD/VIA XYZ MHz
Deskstar model: 15GB, 20GB, 30GB, 45GB, 60GB, 75GB (is there a 40GB?)
IDE Controller for Deskstar: BX/AMD/VIA ATA-33, Promise/HighPoint/AMD/VIA/Other ATA66/ATA100 (differentiate RAID and non-RAID controllers if you can)
RAID: YES, NO (include the cases of single drive use on RAID controllers)
Term of use: If still running, for how long? If drive failed, how long before failure?

Let's see if we can keep the extraneous comments to a minimum. There may be a trend here.

Abit BE6-2, but not on the highpoint controller... BX chipset
75GXP 30G HD
Never been RAIDed
Running since Late May, no probs... Mostly Win98, but until recently I put on Win2k(not because of the drive)

One 15 gig GXP running on Abit BF6, with Promise Ultra 66, run fine until it failed after about 6 weeks. RMA'd it, and the new one has been fine for 2 months. Now, I have a 30gig GXP running on a KT7-RAID (HPT370 controller), not RAIDed yet, runs fine. A partition disappeared, ran the self diagnostic test and I have to RMA this one too. These drives are great performers, but that's not a very good track record.

Had the drive for 3 months and so far so good. Fastest and quietest IDE drive I've ever seen.

IBM Deskstar 30GB 75GX
Onboard ATA100 RAID Controller

Had it for about a month now, it is probably the fastest IDE drive I have ever used. It is also very quiet, I love it. I have had no problems with it as of yet.

4 IBM 75gxp 30 gig drives, fat 32 and Ntfs, All the Ibm drives where installed and formated at the same time in August. One of the drives was bad right out of the box. Now last week my Win2k os drive was starting to show signs of drive failure so I yanked it out and will rma it back to Ibm after the holliday season is over. The other three seem to be fine so far knock on wood.

Sorry SUO ... let me write down the whole situation the way you want:

[*]CPU/Chipset: VIA KT133 - Abit KT7 RAID - Tbird 850 MHz
[*]Deskstar model: 45GB
[*]IDE Controller for Deskstar: ATA-66, ATA-100-RAID
[*]RAID: NO (single drive use on RAID)
[*]Term of use: Mobo has been returned. Had errors during all windows' and linux's installations. One out of eight OS installations were successfull. "Cannot write to AUX" message in WinME. Random lockups with Win2k. Going to PIO mode improved stability, but still considerably unstable. Didn't matter if connected to Via ATA66 or Highpoint **370 ATA100 controlers. Used different cables and BIOS revisions.

[*]CPU/Chipset: VIA KT133 - Asus A7V (Rev 1.02) - Tbird 850 MHz
[*]Deskstar model: 45GB (the same drive as in situation 1)
[*]IDE Controller for Deskstar: ATA-66, Promise ATA-100
[*]RAID: NO
[*]Term of use: Runs fine. The HD is running in this system for 3 weeks now.

Just got a 45GB 75GXP....... Running under 2k, I am having some weird problems.

Eg. when burning a CD, the system sometimes just stops...... not freezes, just stops. Processes continue to run, but the CD literally stops dead in its tracks.

Not sure if this is HD problem though, but I am suspicious as all hardware was running perfect before the GXP.

20.5gb, RMA'd it because it would click click click beep! and freeze up, but they sent it back and told me nothing was wrong with it. Now have 2 partitions on it for the past couple of weeks since I got it back, very very loud, very fast though.

CPU/Chipset: VIA KT133/ AMD 800 TB
Deskstar model: 30GB
IDE Controller for Deskstar: VIA ATA-33
RAID: NO
Term of use: drive failed in 1st month. It gave some scratching sound. So I returned it and got a new one. The new one has been working so far. I notice that the 2nd drive was in 2 boxes: its original box in a bigger box with padding. The lst one came with its original box only.

Disk sequential Write-18.2
Disk Random Seek and Rewrite-0.9 YES less than 1!! horrible!! I suspect I need the patch cuz this test deals with the cache I think.
